A few questions

Ok, well recently i came into ownership of a 4 door 65 ford falcon with a 200 straight six. Basically the engine is in bad need of a rebiuld, and thats going to be done but i had some questions in regards to performance upgrades for after i rebiuld it. Now first off, i dont want to bore it out, now that thats clear here are the questions.

1. Carb adaptor for a duel barrel, ok well basically i've been able to find adaptors but i was wondering if somebody could like make a list of all the things i would need to have (i already know i need the carb :P) caue the descriptions are quite confusing and i dont want to buy all this stuff just to find i need something else too.

2. also i was debating getting a better camshaft put in it but i couldnt decide what type. I have purchased the ford falcon handbook, and i did see the large variety, but i also wanted some peoples personal opinions. I'd pretty much be using it for driving around town, not any real extreme stuff like to where i'd need a radical cam. Basically one that combines good performance with every day driving.

3. I noticed on the ford six store (i think it was that store) that ford performance headers are fairly cheap as oppossed to other headers i could buy, are they still fairly high quality? Cause for 340 i could get some headers with ceramic coating and that damn good.

Now onto the last question, just like where could i find some parts for it, specifically would it be possibly to find a new rocker arm shaft that was fully assembled already (i could assemble it, but i would like it to be pre assembled) Mine is in decent shape, but my friend suggests that we cant fully clean out the cruddy oil that is int he shaft so we should replace it all togethor. If possibly links like nappa or kregan would be good, but if its a website as long as its got good reccomendation i'm cool with that too.

Thank you for any help you provide, and for having such a wonderful community :). Its quite interesting to see the amount of people interested in keeping thier straight sixs.

And welcome to THe Forum.

The very first step in any rebuild plan is to assess what you have. You won't know until you begin the disassembly. If you find excessive bore wear or cylinder wall damage an overbore may be required. If your engine doesn't have a good piston, rings, cylinder wall seal other things you might do to increase performance will be for naught.

Before you disassemble you might want to do some more assessment to determine if the symptoms you are seeing/hearing are related to valve stem seals, valve job and/or pistons and cylinder seal. If you can determine that a valve job will clean up this engine, then plan accordingly.

Know that your stock Autolite 1100 carb and Load-a-Matic distributor are designed to work together. If you change to a 2100 two barrel, you should also upgrade to a '68 and later distributor, which will be compatible with the 2100 and have centrifugal advance as well.

You didn't say what trans you are working with. Without some head work any cam with over 260 degrees of duration and .400" lift will not be able to utilize its potential. IF you are changing cam, plan on upgrading the gear and chain with FSPP double roller pieces. Always use new lifters with a new cam. I think Mike (FSPP) has stock type adjustible rocker arms to. Cleaning or replacing your rocker shaft and modifying your rocker arms is an excellant idea.

A performance cam will lower your cylinder pressure and vacuum. You can compensate somewhat by raising your compression a little and using manifold vacuum to the distributor for more initial advance at an idle.

Any header should be coated or it will be a pile of rust in a few years.

Adios, David

By trans you mean tranny right? cause it has a 3 speed in it, probably the 2.77. If you didnt mean that then sorry, i'm not that up to my car terms :). This is my first project car, and my friend is helping me alot on the working on it and everything.

I was already planning on putting a pertronix on it, so with that and keeping the single barrel carb, i will probably look into getting headers first before i change the carb to a two barrel that seems to be the best way for me.
