the edelbrock filter is only 3" tall if u cant find a good performance filter :D

I know, I know :D I just like the chrome lid type better but I may consider it. How wide is it? I did not see dimensions on the web page you linked me to.

It look's like the only K&N options I have are a 6 in diameter 2in thick round one, or a 4.5x7 rectangular one- both a bit smaller looking than I'd like. Rectangular goes along with the shape of the valve cover, but round has more of a vintage look and I hope to put on a finned valve cover someday. What do you guys think would look better?

mustangers may have less clearance due to the body being lower on the frame.

There is no fitment issues to worry about as far as clearance on a Mustang with a Carter YF (or a Carter YF off a 300 6 for that matter).

Just use a stock aircleaner that is off a car equiped with a YF carb or modify a aftermarket aircleaner with a stock base as mentioned above...an excellent idea IMO!!

An aircleaner off a Maverick will have the best clearance, but a Mustang aircleaner will fit just as well. I perfected the technique of swapping to a YF carb about 4 years ago  and all the info is on my website.

Just an FYI....You cant drill out the jet in a YF or you will ruin the carb! They have a metering rod that you adjust to make it richer or leaner...kinda like a Edelbrock/Carter 4 Bbl carb.

its about 12"x6-7" roughly (i can check later if u want, but thats pretty close anyways...maybe 10" min.)

the stock aircleaner base is good to use though if u do modify it because u should be able to get a taller filter in there than one thats completely above the carb....what would u guys say...about 2 inches or so? that should allow u to get a 4-5" filter in there. u can always get the filter lid for the aircleaner...but IMO thats a waste of money unless u have an open hood scoop or something.

Later,

is the YF pretty much the same as the YFA in that sense? I enlarged my jet, i didnt actually drill it, but i ground it close to the crown since the hole gets bigger there. how do u adjust the metering rod? is the difference between the carbs here? I have a screw attached to the top of the accelerator pump and the metereing rod is attached to that as well, i have it tightened quite a bit, is that the accelerator pump only adjuster or also adjustment for a quicker shot of fuel? I'm leaving my carb alone for now cause its running decent although i think it has a very slight vacuum leak. but the info would be very valuable, and i thank u for it.

Placid and Doug,

Fitament IS an issue for me as all the aftermarket air housings sit above the carb flange. I do not have a stock lower-rise air cleaner housing for the YF, and there none in the local wrecking yards- I've been to all of them! (well, there was one but they wanted 50 bucks for it!) The 1100 air housing I have will not clear the big choke housing that sticks up about 5/6 in. above the flange on the YF, so aftermarket is my only choice.

The downside to the triangle Pro- Flow is that by the dimensions given and my hood clearance, I estimate it will be right up against the underside of my hood. It looks like it's intended for most of the airflow to come from the top with a little on the sides- I think a solid top housing that's intended to breathe on the sides would flow more air as far as open element setups go, with Doug's ram-air setup flowing the best of them all

Doug,

Thanks for the warning on the jet- I was about to get out the drill set! How do I adjust it? I bought a reman. carb so have no rebuild or calibration instructions.

Thor,
Do you ebay?? If you do, I can let you know when I find one that'll fit your carb and give you the link. Generally, I find them on there in the $10.00 price range every now and then

I'll give you and placid some more tips on the YF tuning tomorrow night.

is the YF pretty much the same as the YFA

A YF and a YFA are the exact same carb except a YFA is a later model carb and has more emissions junk attatched to it. I have both models sitting out in my shop :D :D :D

Thanks, Doug,

I checked e-bay last week and found one, but could not find one the next day. Using the library computer has it limitations and I can't always get back to make bids when I want to. As soon as I get my tuning troubles worked out (see my other thread) I will just order a K&N if I don't have a stock one lined up.

I can wait on the tuning tips till tomorrow as I'm going to try my 1100 again- but what's this about adjusting dist. vacuum advance by an allen nut inside the vac. fitting? My carb only has one vac. line, btw.

are there 2 different kinds of YFA's cause i did a search for the YFA diagram and there were 2 kinds...although trying to find that page right now is not working out, lol....but there was the YFA-NF, which is what i have without the emissions junk and somehting else (cant find the page, so i dont even remember what it stands for) but i suppose then that i have the YF then?

Does anyone know if a Pro-Flo for 2-bbl (2-5/8") would fit a 250 w/ Autolite 1100 (2-3/16")?

JC WHITNEY-bought 6 inch chrome cleaners for the solex carb(volkswagen). The hole is offset, but doesn't pose a problem and they are only 10 or 11 bucks each!

Wow- this thread is old. I posted exactly a year ago, and I'm still having carb troubles! funny how things go....

look for carbed 4-cyl Mustangs, around 85-86. They had YF's

thanks, but I've long since given up on the crappy parts store YF's I was trying last year and went to a Pony Carbs 1101. Can't say it's any better, though, esp. with what I payed for it.

Me too - that's why I always do my own work!
