ok im having a electrical problem. a few weeks ago my car died out of no wear. and i had to jump it about 4 times (along the way) to get it home. i finally got it home and started to go to work. i brought the battery in and the alternator and tested them. the battery was bad but the alternator was good. so i got a new battery and put it in. to no avail it would die. at first it would die randomly, but after the new battery it would die if i turned on the heater, lights, or whipers. so i just kept thinking it had to be the alternator and took it into work and tested it again. and again it passed. so i decided to look at the wireing and i then replaced all the wireing from the alternator to the voltege regulator. and still even thoe one of the wires was barly on there it didnt work.

ANOTHER question i have reguarding this is do you guys have your stater hooked up??? its the wire at the very top of the alternator suposed to tell the alternator to turn on (it goes from your voltege regulator to the top of the alternator) cause i didnt have it hooked up and never have. i decided that i would try that and ran a wire and then things became weird. i jumped the car and tried to turn on stuff, and they were all really slow, the radio would only turn on about 3-5 seconds after you turned it on, the window wipers were really slow even in full. anyways guys im stumped and i was wondering if you guys have herd of anything like this or have expirenced it. any ideas? thoughts? there all appretiated. thanks!

8) it sounds to me like you have a bad voltage regulator. as for the wiring oyu are talking about, can you post a pic??

This is what it should look like (2nd question):

Excellent graphics Slade, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Did you do that yourself? Looks like Visio.

Ric.

No...can't claim that...I scammed it off of someone else. But, it is one of the easiest wiring diagrams I've seen for the cars.

I may be running down the wrong road here but it would seem to me that a new battery should run the accessories (wipers/heater motor, etc) just fine (even without an alt) until the batt ran down. I think that I would look for a bad ground to the battery/engine/etc. I would clean the connections on the plus side too. Is the batt grounded to the engine? Is the engine grounded to the body?

Good luck in your search.

Sorry about getting off the subject like that, but I am always looking for good schematics. Like the one below, it is an excellent resource that you can download.

http://hammar.dyndns.org/~djhamma/wiring.htm

Check out this link. It should have all the wiring info you need. Download the files and make a printout of each. I ended up making a book that can be taken down to your rig.

Dick makes an excellent point. Take your new schematic and go through the whole system checking for correct, broken and clean connections. If you are still having problems let me know. From your profile info it looks like you are just down the hill from me. If I can find the time I’ll come by and give you a hand.

Good luck, Ric.

thanks alot guys,

ok i re-wired the voltege regulator (it was incorrect) then i charged the battery and started it up and it ran fine all night long. However everything was still slow.... do you guys know of a little cylender that is held on by one of the bolts that holds the voltege regulator and has a wire that is spliced in with the big yellow wire (look at the diagram for refrence) its only about as big as your pinky and i dont know what it does.

do you know how big the stater wire should be? i have a 14 gage wire on it. does it need to be bigger?

also just so you guys know i have replaced almost everything in this car and most of the electrical. all the wireing from the alternator-the voltege regulator is new, new ground and positive wires are new. new alternator, battery (1 week old), new voltege regulator, starter sylenoid. i dont mind replacing all this stuff even if it doesnt fix it in the long run. its just nice to know its new and it looks good too. well thanks alot for any ideas you might have.

Slade, that diagram was a huge help thanks alot. any chance on getting a diagram just for the starter sylenoid? possibly somthing is staying on??

8) that cylinder is a condesor like you find in a point type dist. it is there to eliminate alternator noise.
