Air cleaner clearance issues with carb. upgrade

Okay, I spoke too soon on my last response to air cleaner clearance issues with my 32/36 upgrade.

I am stuck.

I took some measurements this evening and found out I need about a 1" high air filter in order to mount my custom Holley 2BBL air cleaner on my current setup. I don't think it's going to be possible for me to fine a 1" high by 9" diameter filter.

So...I got to thinking. Hmmm...remote air cleaner. If I create a custom air box to attach to my carburator then I could duct a flexable hose to a cone shaped filter.

Now all I have to do is draw up the plans and build the box.

Any other ideas?

Yep, use a Toyota Hilux remote filter 'gooseneck'. The Asain carb has a similar top, or can be modified to fit. The common 32/36's have four bolts to secure. Some funny French cars have similar remote filters. Hey, the AMC Apliance, um, Alliance may have one.

The Tempo/Topaz 1940 series carby or TBI's have a remote filter.

The Escorts ran a Carter made 2-bbl, so the air cleaner from one of those may form a good start for a remote contraption

You may be forced with a Pinto base with a some local fabrications from a sheet metal company. That way you could combine stock parts with a curved gooseneck to deliver air from a 5.0 aftermarket pod filter, or conventional pannel air filter from an EFI Ford.

Best components are little orphan Anny numbers.

Chaz, I thought about a drop based a cleaner but I like the look of the remote air box. But that's just me. :roll:

is that your primered 66 below your posting?
that a functional hood scoop?

I´d suggest ducting the carb to the scoop via some homemade filter box that houses a square filter element.

I'm was thinking the same thing this morning. Or, I could duct it to one of those openings in the front spoiler.

you could drill out a hole where the horn is...just move it and duct air like others here...I think doug...

box itself could be made from stamped steel, spot welded, seam sealed and painted, or made from brass sheets and soldered/ brazed (??) together.
If you´re good in laying some fibreglass, you could go that route as well.

In any case, the box can be supported by some metal rods.

water infiltration: anybody running a hood scoop directly ducted to the carb will have to deal with this.
Just like on Ford shaker scoops, I´d put on a drain tube at the lowest point of the assembly, allowing incoming water to drain.

K&N once advertised their filter elements to atomize incoming rainwater without affecting filter qualities and without sacrificing engine and carb life.
However, I can´t find that quote nowhere on their homepage now.

i have no hood clearance issues now. i bought the stovebolt carb and adapter. used a threaded rod that pivits and works good. my air cleaner i got off of a chevy chevette it is the drop base type. the carb opening is a 1/8 to small all the way around but i grinded off the lip and it fits perfect. i cut off half the snorkel to fit in my tight 1/4s and i have about 1.25 inchs of space to play with. personally id grab the kandn xtreme air cleaner lid throw that on a round air filter and cut a hole on the hood where the scoop is .

i have the tempo bonnet and just punced a dent on the other side of it so i could point it backwards and clear the choke....i have a hose from that to the middle of the top of my hood scoop...i will most likely get one of those cone filters for it sometime...right now its just a sock..lol...but i have driven it in heavy rain and noticed no loss in performance or anything...although since its on the top of the scoop the water wont run off the hood into the hose, but rather just into the engine compartment.
