8) yes you can use a larger cam. a 112 lobe center is the better cam to use since it has less overlao between the valves and works better at low rpm.
 
Also advance the 274 cam 4 degrees & that will pick up your low end.
The 250" engine will be ok for daily driving with the stock converter.
If it were a 200" i would install a converter with a higher stall speed.
I hope you have headers & have the carb direct mounted on the log.
If you do not go with the 264 camshaft. Bill
 
i'll have a direct mounted H/W 2bbl but i planned on keeping the manifold, in that case i'll get the 264 dual pattern cam
 
Since you want to keep the stock exhaust manifold, you could get the 264 intake with the 274 exhaust on the 112 lobe center & advance 2 degrees.
