just wondering if anyone on the board has the same setup as i do.

my air cleaner hits but does not distort the hood... contemplating lowering the engine.
wondering what else i should look for... i bought the car this way.

A lot of guys have posted and responded to posts relative to air cleaner clearance issues. They can be due to 250, or just custom carb setups etc. Try searching on:

air cleaner hood

and then maybe on

air cleaner clearance

and maybe

air cleaner clearnace hood

and then maybe

air cleaner clearance 250

stuff like that.

You should find plenty of good info.

thanks, but for some reason when i search this forum, all i get is anything that doesnot pertain to what i am looking for.

i works different than any others i am on....

you could recurve the air cleaner base upwards, so it brings it down over the carb. do it evenly so you don't have a crookid air cleaner. probably 3/4" would do. they sell drop base air cleaners, just find 1 to fit your carb neck

the air cleaner is a stocker off of something and appears to be a drop-base.

it is low enought it has a bump for the choke. the bump is what hits, and the wingnut/bolt.
the top pf the cleaner nests on the bolting location on the top pf the carb... any lower and it would cut off flow.

i think i need to fab some lowered engine brackets unless a different set will work.

Howdy LDGn63:

I went through the same clearance problems with a 250 in my '65 Ranchero. Take a look at slotting the engine mount holes that bolt to the block. Slotting them downward allows the engine to drop the amount of the slot. I gained a little more than a half an inch that way. Also take a look at the connection between the block mount and the chassis mount for the possibility of dropping the engine with slotting the holes. You will only be able to drop so far until you have steering linkage interference.

I haven't looked at Mustangs lately and don't recall how similiar they were to Falcons in '65.

You didn't say what carb you are using. The Carter RBS from the early 70's is slightly shorter than the later Carter YFs on a 250.

I also dimpled the underside hood support framework in tight areas.

Hope this helps.

Adios, David

The Maverick air cleaner is a lot lower. This is a photo of the 250 I had in my 66 Mustang. I still had to file slots in the engine mounts to lower the engine about 3/4".

:D Would it not be possible to fab up a carb hat such as used for a turbo set up, and mount the aircleaner in a remote spot using some flex tubing?

Mraley has one like that...still looks high.

old Econoline and Bronco air cleaners sit VERY low. Has a bonnet on the carb, and the element in a can over the dizzy. Also, use Maverick engine mounts.

doesnt someone selll some lower engine mounts...thats very easy

Yes, I do not recall his user name, but it is someone from outside the US that seems to build very high quality parts; most of which (I think) are SS.

i'll have to find some pix/dimensions of Maverick mounts and compare to the ones I currently have... since i don't know the origin of the ones i have now.

Thanks guys!
