I have a '80 Mustang 200 I6 with Duraspark II. It works fine.

But if I decide to go with a Oz crossflow head I cant run my Duraspark setup as it will not clear the intake.

My question is what is entailed in installing and running a Pertronix setup.

Does it use the stock cap? Im assuming it uses a different rotor.

Does the Pertronix use a control module?

Can the Petronix be wired to run off a Duraspark control box?

Thanks for any info.

I'll answer what I can.

1) It does use a stock cap and rotor. No special rotor, just what ever one it for that distributor and cap.

2) It uses a control module, but it is located inside the cap. It also really only acts as a magnetic pickup, but the Ignitor II will actually control the dwell as well.

3) Don't know honestly.

it doesn't need the duraspark box. mine I wired directly to the coil and fired it right up and has been fine for the past year and a half. the pertronix has the module in the dizzy so you don't need a external box.

I take it you can run a aftermarket high energy coil with no problems? I dont see why it would be a problem but havent run anything but Duraspark for years.

And thanks for the info.

I thought I read on this forum somewhere that somebody was using an early Duraspark (D1) cap and rotor (small like point style) on a later DII.

But will that still clear? I have NO idea what a "crab style" dist cap looks like.

yes to the high output coil.

I have the 45,000 flamethrower with Pertronix I and wires
I noticed an improvment in performance and relaibaility

if you read the teeny print with the petronix ignitor I, i believe that it says that if you use anything other than the stock coil, or one of petronix's HiPo coils, it voids the warranty and i think it mentions that it can cause some damage....
i'll say that i've had no problems running a different HiPo coil...

8) you dont need to get rid of your duraspark as you can use a cap and rotor from say a maverick with the same engine. and yes i have already checked it out. i have a 250 duraspark from a granada that i fit a cap and rotor from a maverick(pre duraspark). it fit perfectly. the 200 is the same way.

I couldn't get the regular cap to fit the DII. The DI and points cap uses clips; the DII uses screws, so it was a no-go.

Here's a Duraspark I which uses the standard clip on cap

And here's the DII which uses a screw on cap.

I may use a DI distributor instead of the Pertronix. Operation is the same but the connector is slightly different.

Jack,
the only reason the cap wouldn't fit was because of the part where the screw was held on by cap, right? i'd love to see a pic of where the interference was if it is at all possible...
wish i had an engine i could mess around with to mock-up stuff on...

Hmmm...

I wonder if you could swap shafts and internals so you would have the Duraspark II internals in the Duraspark I distributor housing?

8) as i recall jack the dist pics you show, the top one is for a 200 and the bottom one is for a 250. when i checked the dist i bought, from a 76 or 77 granada 250, i found the 200 and 250 caps were different even when you went back to the point controlled dist. the 250 cap screwed in place even on the early dist.
