Baseline? I tune mine E-A-D-G low to high, and use 4/4 timing. OK, being serious...
If you want to set the motor's timing, disconnect and plug the vacuum line from the carby. Set the timing to about 9° advance. The book I have says 6° either manual or auto but you can go a little more for better performance and economy. Remember to re-hook the vacuum line when it's done.
Another way to optimise it, is advance until it pings audibly, then retard 2° and try again. Sometimes a worn or sticky distributor will cause erratic performance until rectified.
