Before the rebuild.

I have some of the parts ready for my 250 rebuild. my first rebuild outside of school. we never used any assembly lube/grease on the worn out 305 and 350 rebuilds in class.

what assembly lube will hold up if the project takes longer than expected? i assume white grease would work but have heard around not to use it, i dont mind the mess but is it bad?

whats a good procedure for engine break-in when all is done. all internals will be new, cam has to be ran 2500-3000 rpms for a while, correct?

any advice before rebuilding would be nice

I use this stuff, but anything that says assembly lube on it should be fine.

Yah run it for at least 20 - 30 minutes at varying rpm after start up.

8) use a good assembly lube like the stuff jackfish showed you, or royal purple or other assembly lube. one thing, make sure that it is good to use on camshafts as well. when breaking in a new cam and lifters follow the recommendation laid out by the cam manufacturer, but as a rule of thumb, usually you run the engine at or above 2000 rpm for 20-25 minutes. do not let the engine idle during this time. if you have a leak that needs to be fixed, or other issue, shut the engine down and fix the problem. the nice thing is that cam break in time is cumulative, so you can start and stop the engine a few times during the process. one more thing, when you fill the crankcase, add a good additive that has a lot of zddp. dont forget to change the oil right after you finish the cam break in and add another bottle of zddp to the mix.

I used the cheapest on sale diesel oil, you're throwing it away after 30 minutes!
Well...recycling it anyways....

8) personally i would go heavy on the assembly lube everywhere. be sure to pack the oil pump to prime it, i usually use vaseline as it liquefies quickly and when you first change the oil it goes away. as for the break in oil, regular old dino oil will fine. you can use the royal purple break in oil after you have broken in the cam, just remember that you are going to change the oil again at about 500 miles, then 1000 miles later before you observe regular intervals.
