Bell housing dowel pin removal?

How do I take these things out? I have a '66 l6 200 that has the dual bolt pattern and the dowels are in place for the smaller pattern.

I have a '67 and up style bellhousing and the pin by the clutch fork is interfering with the bellhousing.

Can I just tap this pin out and be done with it? Do I really need these pins?

That pin wouldn't come out with vice grips...

Should I just drill out the bellhousing and clearance it to fit?

Tap it out from the forward side with the appropriate punch. If it seems like it won't come without excessive force you can try putting some heatsink compound or wrap a wet strip of cloth around the pin and heat the surrounding cast with a propane torch, then it should drive out a bit easier. It should come out, the pins are very handy when trying to install the tranny with the engine in the car, I would use them.

I ended up whipping out my trusty propane torch and heating up the area around the pins.

Some pursuasion with the vice grips later and they're out! But unfortunately probably not reusable, lol...

What size pins do I need to replace these with? I'd imagine putting them back in involves a little WD-40 and a mallet...

:hmmm: Hi happystang. If they are not boogered too bad.Take a good flat file and knock down the burrs, then polish with some medium to fine emery cloth and you should be good to go.
Clamp the pin gently in a bench vice to hold it.
Good luck.Have fun.Be safe.
