Belt Question - Squealing Noise

so the problem goes like this...my car warms up with a higher fast idle than she should have but it's okay by me (i'm no perfectionist). The problem comes when she kicks down to a slower/rougher idle (more than likely due to my only par or sub par tuning skills - again i'm no perfectionist!). As soon as she kicks down and i go to reaccelerate say from off the line, my engine drive belts will squeal like crasy unless i feather the pedal. eventually she will quiet down but the first maybe 4 seconds off the line i get this irritating squeal. It's also occured when I get in my car, start it and shift into neutral (on my way to drive). It's bizarre and I've adjusted belts before but they don't seem to be too loose (indicative of a squealing sound) or too tight...

Any suggestions? Any rule of thumb on how much give your belts should have....keep in mind they are all fresh from the rebuild less than 3 thou. miles ago and this squealing just occured out of no where....

P.s. my dad says the fact that the car drops down to idle and at a very slow RPM has nothing to do with a squeal as soon as i mash the gas....what do you all think?? Thanks!!

I'm pretty sure it should be a half inch deflection either way--or one inch total. Do you have power steering? That's a likely culprit. Your pulleys also might not be lined up just right.

if you have a 1/2 inch of play in the belt and they haven't worn smooth or anything tak a bar of soap and rub it on the botton side of the belt. that will quiet the squeeling until you decide whether or not you think you should get new belts. just don't buy belts from kragen. they most likely won't have them and they will try to sell you something that is not for your car and say "these should work"

Yes, I do have power steering and the pully is just a bit bent so there’s some wobble which I’m not happy with but I haven’t had this problem until now – in other words, it’s been at least 5 thousand miles and now I’ve got this issue….power steering pully’s seem to be a bit expensive – any suggestions for replacing em? Are they fairly generic??

Is the belt glazed or cracked at all? That can cause it. Make sure your power steering pulley is at least torqued down to specs. Same goes for the others. Also, check your power steering fluid level. I've heard of cases when power steering fluid is low, it can cause squealing.
