What is the preferred year block to start a build with ?? I once saw an article that gave the differences between the 200 and 250 for ID purposes and now I cannot find it, any help please thx

The 250 and 200 are much the same but the 250 is taller.
The blocks are pretty much the same from year to year, so it's probably more important to find one in good condition and low miles. That would more than likely be available in a "newer" block, like say from mid 70's and up.

There are also 2 distinct varietes of 200, one with a low-mount starter and the other a high-mount. The mid to late 70's had high-mounts and the older ones and the last ones from the 80's had low-mount starters, which is preferred because it has the same tranny bolt pattern as a small block Ford, and therefor more transmission options.

do the 200 and 250 both have 5 freeze plugs. I know one had 3 and the other 4 bolt water pump I just dont remember which. it sounds like 80-83 is the preferred 200 to start with ??

Yes, both have 5 freeze plugs.
Which one to choose depends on into what it's going, and how it will be used.
A tractor or a full-blown race car or something in-between?

If you are going to play in the sand, historically it means more midrange and highend rather than grunt, most of the sand guys really keep the wheels spinning, it can be done with the 200, but not with a good basic log head build in my opinion around 150 HP.
