Big cam, stock carb?

So my next big plans are to swap in a T5 as well as a different, rebuilt bottom end/block.

Sometime after that (realistically, no sooner than a year) I will be putting the aluminum head on.

The issue is, I want to get all of the bottom end upgrades done now. If I put in a big cam; 264, maybe bigger, it is undecided; but continue to use the stock 1bbl and exhaust manifold, how will it effect my driving? Will it kill my driveability? Kill mileage?

I'm glad to see what you guys are saying so far.

Say I went with a much bigger cam-for kicks. If one were to use a really aggressive cam with a restrictive top end, how will the engine react?

You might find that just when it starts wanting to stretch its legs, you're running out of air and fuel. I'd not exceed 274° with a near-stock carb.

Since you have to pull the head to do the cam, why not run it over to the machine shop and have the log milled. Then you can do a direct mount 2V while your at it. I have several used Autolites for sale ($75), they might be fine as is, but you'd probably want to put a kit in it just to be safe.

I actually have a 2 barrel 4100 laying around myself. (whether it's still good or not is a different story)

But I really didn't want to put any money into the existing head. Eh, we'll see.

I am planning a T5 swap. I have a 200 with a 264 cam, one-barrel YF and my manifold/single pipe exhaust. With the C4 in the car now, at about 70mph/3000 RPM the little Falcon is begging for another gear. And I know that since a manual has 8 to 10% less parasitic loss of power than an auto, once I get the T5 it should do fine in 5th. Lighter weight too.

You'll get a benefit in economy. You'll be cruising at or closer to the engines torque peak rather than burying the throttle and using more gas than necessary.
