A friend and I removed my head a while ago and he noticed a crack that runs next to cyl #1 across the head bolt hole above the header on the sealing surface. its about 2" long but its not really that deep, I know that its still bad. My question is, just to get it drivable again for a while would it hurt anything to just put the head back on and run it as is? I'm going to replace the block anyways but I want to make sure that I don't hurt anything else because of this crack. it was overhauled about 20,000 miles ago by the original owner whom I bought it off of, and i'm pretty sure it was cracked when they did it, but it didn't leak or anything. I imagine that the gasket will protect it from antifreeze getting into the cylinder but probably allow some to escape out the crack and run down the block. advise?

If I understand what you are saying I would not put the engine back together until you figure out how bad things are.

Hey, go for it, you have nothing to loose since you will replace the block in the future.

I would clean the crack with carb cleaner & then put some JB weld in the crack, draw file the surface flat the reinstall the head.

If it does'nt work, you know you will have to replace the block anyway.

If you have the time & energy go for it, you know the circumstances.

Good luck?? William
