I've fixed everything. New plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, condensor. Carb's rebuilt and tuned perfectly. Car purrs. But it blows smoke.
It's hard to say if it's oil or coolant, or what.
I don't know what to do.
Is it possible it's burning off crud inside the cylinders from sitting for a long time?
It's a 223.

Could be that the rings are stuck from sitting so long. I've had some success with Marvel Mystery oil in old stuck engines, but if it has been sitting along time it could be other things like hard cracked valve guide seals. Or possibly it could just be old and tired.

I take it that you got the carb figured out. I agree with Jack, try some Marvel oil. If that doesn't help, give her the ol' BonAmi treatment. If the rings aren't sealing, it should help to re-seat them. If it is valves or stem seals, then nothing will help except fixing them. If the engine is just worn out then a rebuild is the only cure. Either way, the Marvel oil and BonAmi won't hurt anything.

Did a compression test, found out the number 3 isn't sealing right.
Those two products are not available in canada, is there something similar that IS available here???

Some folks use ATF instead of Marvel oil. BonAmi is a cleaning powder normally used in bathrooms and kitchens. I don't do much shopping in Canada, but am surprised that it isn't available there.

Find some PB Blaster. If that's not available, get any kind of stuff available in the Great White North that is sold to loosen bolts. Then spray or pour a liberal dose into the spark plug hole. Let soak overnight. put rag over spark plug hole, spin engine, reinstall plug, start engine.

It may not help. There was a reason that car was parked, ya know....... :(

Do I add the ATF to the crankcase?
How much is safe?
SHould I use a flammable or non-flammable penetrating oil?
Anything to help?????

I would just add a quart of ATF to the crankcase and drive it. I doubt that flammable penetrating oil would hurt considering the fact that gasoline burns quite well also.

What exactly does the ATF do inside the crank case? How can it free up my sticky ring?

ATF has solvents in it. IF the rings are stuck and IF you drive it enough it MIGHT loosen them up. It also might not, and if they are broken, they won't heal themselves.

I'm assuming they are stuck. It's got 53000 miles on it. it sat for a bit, it drove for a bit, it sat for a bit, it drove for a bit kind of thing.
Hopefully that will work.
If not, I may rebuild it over the winter. Where can I get all the biots for this engine?

I would do the ATF treatment, drive it a while, change the oil to a lightweight high detergent oil, add some snake oil (you know, the miracle stuff sold at all car parts stores) of whatever flavor strikes your fancy, drive it some more and see what happens. I really would get some BonAmi, it can help with stuck/non sealing rings. None of these things will hurt your engine.
