Bore cylinders best option?

Well i listened to that knocking noise the other day and now that it had been refreshed in my mind im thinkin it could be piston slap, sort of a really quick sounding knock that quiets down after heating up, so i was wondering if the best option was to bore it out some? Dont think its overly expensive to get done, if so how much should be taken out, a little like .020 or more like .040?

I just dont want to think its a main bearing and replace them, and other things when the engine is out and find out that it still makes the noise after its put back in my car.

Should i get it done either way?
Thanks,
Lee

That does sound an awful lot like piston slap to me. If you plan on pulling the engine out, a lot of machine shops will inspect for the necessary jobs to be done to get you back in order for free.

You won't know how much to have bored until you compare it to spec and see how much NEEDS to be done.

When boring always go minimum that will remove wear and true cylinders. The only caveat is be sure there are piston available in that size . Some Ford start at 0.030, and some max is 0.040.

8) since it does sound like piston slap, i wouldnt do anything about it until it got louder, or rebuild time rolls around.

Depending on the miles, rebuild time might be here. And with getting it bored, might as well get everything done at once since you really shouldn't be reusing bearings and a lot of the Times worn bearings might require the crank to be turned.

I guess the options are full rebuild or let it be till you are ready for that

If boring cylinders could fix it, probably not practical without typical "bottom end" rebuild as 3/tree mentions. - as Rbohm said , unless it gets louder, ... ... even a worn six can last a long time.

hopefully trouble isn't waiting but personally, I'd start looking for a drop-in used or rebuilt engine or even similar core to start with - ready or not ...

Thanks guys, i normally take my car off the road in early to mid november, and get it back on the road late april or sometime in may, so i would more than likely have at least 6 months to do the rebuild if i wanted to get it back on the road when i normally do. I figured i would do it this season seeing how the noise is noticebly louder than last year at this time. I looked on CI and there seems to be a good selection of pistons, I like getting from CI b/c they put some serious effort into their products and really know what theyre doing.

THanks powerband, ya ive been lookin for another 6cyl for about 2 years now, not willing to drive several hours to ones i do find also :( I imagine it will last a while still but im gonna start at another school next year, all highway driving 2 hours there and back, so i was kinda hoping to tackle this project and get it freshened up for many many highway miles in its near future

Its definitly got ticking lifters, but it was making that noise when i first got it, and now gradually this knocking noise has been getting louder on cold starts.

Cant find my stethoscope, i cant quite determine where exactly its coming from but its defintily a bit louder when i go under the car and listen; the sound is llike really quick knocking, not slow like if u were to normally knock on a door (i guess).
