Ok, I've got some problems with my shifter. I've put it back into the gearbox no worries, except I dont have to push down on the gearstick in order to select reverse. Could this be caused with the ball pivot not being tightened into the gearbox enough? it had to be pushed in with some force before I pulled the shifter lever out..
Anyway, heres some pics.

The detent into reverse is the spring in the gearshift lever.
The gearshift lever is pushed/pressed down to compres this spring so that the hook int the bottom of the gear lever can slip under the casting in the gear shift housing and reverse gear can be selected.
pull out the gear lever again and look at the bottom shape of the gear lever and you will see what I mean.

XE isnt it " Nice Falcon hole"

Cars with gearshifts coming out of the floor are evil. Either epicyclic trans like a Model T, or 3 on the tree like my XE Falcon. See, even you one wants to be a sequential drive with no gearshift...

But relax, Backlash is back. At least he isn't as narrow focused as me!

Good fortune, Disco', when they work, they are magic, with as nice a gear and clutch action as you'll find in a big car.[/i]
