car suddenly dropped 2 quarts of oil (in a week)...and has slightly beeen running hot

now, the car idles fine (a little noisy but OK)....but when you pull off the clutch...it sounds like a plastic bag whacking a fan...and then it goes away...its not a constant sound...nor is it everytime

the shop (justa shop i stopped at) said it might be a rod bearing...

DOES THAT SOUND RIGHT? WHAT ARE ROD BEARING SYMPTOMS?

I am so ready to sell my car...but I need to fix her to sell her

HELP!

Maybe take a look maybe you picked something up? Is the cover over the front of the bell. If not maybe you sucked something up. or the clutch is going bad..
Is it running ok and is it steal lousing oil.. Did you drive it perticuly hard??

I spun the tires once in my garage....not particularly hard..with a puddle to start

I tend to think its the clutch...since about 6 months ago the bearings made a whine for a day then went away

I am gonna let this shop diagnois it...then drive it to my fav mechanic...the one that did the $500 head gasket

any other ideas what a rod bearing sounds like? its a knocking isnt it?

When i spun a rod bearing on a v6 one time it was evident what was going on, there was a loud constant knock, but when i tore it apart it was pretty long gone so i'm not sure what to tell you the begining symptoms would be. The thing that has me curious is the oil lose...even if the rod goes bad, it's internal and shouldn't go anywhere but back in the pan. This probably doesn't help you much at this point, but i know when mine went out it was loud and constant.

thats my thought. I havent noticed any smoke. but if I am not getting full compression on one cylinder, it might leak some oil on a blow by...is that a correct theory?

perhaps my bung is leaking again...it was before.

EVERYONE PLEASE SAY IT WITH ME "please be the clutch...please be the clutch...please be the clutch..."

not cheaper

esp since my clutch was shaky to begin with. I WANT it to be the clutch and rear main seal which would acocunt for oil loss (am i right?)

if its the head gasket AGAIN, I will still need a clutch...and the wife will be FED UP with it and make it go bye-bye

I would investigate the easy (cheap) stuff first. If you get the noise when you first push the clutch, then it goes away, it could just be a bad release bearing. It would sound like a loud whirring sound like a marble rolling in a can. It will sometimes stop. It usually happens just as you push the clutch, but sometime occurs when you release it. If you pull up on the clutch pedal, it should go away altogether. It will get worse over time.

If that's what it is, you need to pull the transmission, slip on a new bearing, and put the transmission back in. Maybe a three hour job, should cost about $20.

I had THAT noisy about 6 months ago. PERFECT description.

Now it is a swishing sound as I oull away...and sometimes it constant, sometimes it goes away.

honestly, the engine SHOULD be fine. running it a li8ttle low on oil once shouldnt kill it. I suspect its the clutch...alos hope its the clutch...throw out bearing ...and while I am there, I will replace the clutch. I dont know when, if ever (has to have been)_ its been replaced...

I got a guy who will do it for $250 not incluyding parts...thats decent I think

If you rear main is shot there will usually be oil where you park it. Oil use and bearing failure are not directly related.Bearing wear and low oil pressure are. Clutch ,pressure plate and throwout bearing replacement is a 30min job--if that $250 quote included a rear main seal --good price-- if just the clutch assem. Way high.

there IS always oil where i park...

the $250 guy (labor only) included rear main seal...but I dont know if I can get the car to him

AAMCO quoted me $375 for complete (labor only)...but after the hurricane, he just got power today so he is a week behind

but I dont wanna drive it any futher.

analysing all everyone has said, my rear main seal is majorly leaking. the explains oil loss....and its proibably all over my pressur e plate and stuff, causing a slip

if I get the rear main replaced, might as well do the clutch...with a 79 or later diamphram style pressure plate...right?

one cmechanic said I have a knock...from either a rod or a worn camshaft

PLUS: my differential is shot. This I believe as it shook like MOTHER on the way home..could this be caused by a bad clutch? another symptom is that when I tunr the wheel and give gas...I hear a bang in the back end. I do noty doubt my diff is gone. I had play in it last year

so...do I put money into it....or sell it as "great to stick a V8 into"
