Broken manifold / head on 66 I6

He broke off the front bolt ear on the head.

Its a common sight on the small six heads, bolt ears can be welded or brazed back on by competent welders.

I agree with Simon's suggestion of braze.

Brazing is under-rated. It'll hold something like this much better than MIG, and requires less overall work to achieve.

I've welded cast iron before, must pre-heat and have the correct arc rod, worked good for the block that I busted the motor mount off of. If you do this, go to your local welding supply store and ask them for the correct rod. I don't remember exactly what it was called...

Brazing is much easier, but I don't think quite as strong.... either way surface prep is critical.

I just welded a stud in. Took about a minute and a half because I had to move the battery ground to get at it. Still holding 5 years later.

8) actually doug you are totally screwed, the others are just being nice. ok i am kidding, the repair is fairly easy depending on how much of the bolt ear has been broken off. if at least half the hole is still there, you can epoxy, or JB weld, a stud in place. or you can have the ear welded back on.

If you have access to a stick welder lincoln electric makes a couple of high nickel rods for cast iron welding the softweld 99 ni for root pass welds and the 55ni for successive or muti pass welds.

Thanks guys, I have a friend that does some serious welding, will get him to do it.... was hoping I did not have to pop for the new alum head already...LOL

I have been a lurker for a long time, just needed help now. You're a great bunch to know!
