Burning fuel to quickly

Hi,

My 1961 comet with a 144 and 1 barrel Holley is burning fuel way faster than it used to. Everything with the engine sounds and works OK when driving. I'm thinking that I didn't adjust the float level right when I rebuilt it. Maybe it's something else. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

8) ok pete, start by checking the float level. if it is high you will burn more fuel.

check your plugs, and the general health of the ignition system. push the timing up until you get detonation on acceleration, then back it down a couple of degrees to stop it.

do a compression check to make sure the cylinders are making about the same amount of power.

check for vacuum leaks.

make sure the fuel pump doesnt have a leaking diaphram.

look for fuel leaks.

after you have gone through these items, make sure your brakes are not dragging, and make sure your tires are inflated properly.
