Bypassing the Heater Plate on my Autolite 1100...

what are the pros and cons?

I hadn't planned on doing this but last weekend's replacement of the water pump, thermostat and new coolant showed me every weak spot in the cooling system. I've had to replace my radiator cap. Today I found that the hose going from the carb plate to the interior heater core has several pinhole leaks. I'm not at a place where I can tear down my heater box yet, so I was just going to put a hose connecting the in/out on the head (bypassing the carb plate and the interior heater core altogether).

Will this affect my carb performance?

where do you live? The point of it is that in a cold climate you don't get carb icing. However, if you live in CA or something, where it's warm, you'll probably be fine.

I'm in central North Carolina. We don't get any of the severe cold weather here. Our average temps look like this:

We get some 40* days where I live in Cali and I have very little trouble starting the Stang w/out the plate hooked up. I say, just bypass the the heater and go with it. If there is a problem, all you need is a utility knife and two clamps and you're good to go -- again.

Howdy Back Ben and All:

Looping the hot water hose back to the head will likely not effect performance at all. If you need cab heat, you may regret it. FoMoCo added the hot water heaters under the carb to prevent carb icing in extreme cold/humid conditions. It really only works after the engine is warmed up and the thermostat opens, and when the heater is calling for hot water to circulate through the heater coils. It does help with carb vaporazation in cold weather when fuel is less volitale. Hot water heat to the carb durig the heat of summer will likely hurt performance.

Once the engine is warmed up the ambient heat from the 3 & 4 siamized exhasut ports will usually add all the carb heat you'll ever need.

One thing I did to help with cold weather driving- I'm in Idaho- was to drill some half inch holes in the base of the air cleaner body, outside the cleaner filiment, and over the head. This allows hot engine air to be drawn into the engine to help with atomization in cold weather. I tape over the holes- not visible from above- and duct cooler outside air to the carb come spring, summer and fall.

Another solution is to use a piece of pipe to replace the leaky hose by splicing in new hose without going all the way to the heater.

Adios, David

actually, the colder the air the better the perf. not inludingicing i am trying to do away with the plate altogether to mount a holley 300. anybody know of an adapter to help? many thanks...
