California Trans Trouble

Hi,
I just bought a 64 falcon convertible, that unfortunately has a bad 3 speed manual transmission on a 170 motor.

Money's an issue, so I don't want to upgrade the motor -just change the trans.

I've been advised to scrap the 3 speed and convert to a automatic c-4 trans-Should I consider a c-5? Overall, I'd like to keep the stock look with a column shift.

Can anyone recommend solutions in Southern California where I can get everything I need for this conversion (parts, labor, expert ford install) at a good price.

Any other budget modification/performance enhancement suggestions appreciated.

Hello La Futura 64, glad to see another LA local!!!
I did the C4 swap myself , and yes it was an improvement over the manual 3 speed.
Here's a quick rundown on what it cost me, to help you decide;
C4 tranny w/ torque convrt. $500
Tranny adapt & mount $100
B&M shifter and extra cable $160
(I went with the B&M shifter for easy installtion, I plan on going with a Mustang or Lokar someday.)
New speedo cable and gear $30
Driveshaft from junkyard, cut and balanced $200
I did it myself so I saved labor cost.
Also I know some of the motors have dual bolt housings and some don't, you might search the archives to be sure.
If you decide on keeping your tranny,I have my old tranny and misc parts for sale that I'll make a really, really good deal on. So you can have a spare to work with. I also have a '66 auto column for sale too.
Lastly, HP Transmissions in Chatsworth are really good. Not the cheapest, but he does excellent honest work.(818) 727-7788. He does all the rebuilds himself, not from some parts exchange house.
