camshaft lockdown

cam spins fine and crankshaft spins fine. mount the timing gears and the chain and everything locks up. i checked my two chiltons manuals (68-71 and 72-78) and both call for a "cam spacer". the spacer should take up the space between the boss on the end of the cam and the inside diameter of the thrust plate. the space is thicker than the thrust plate and should keep the cam and gear from clamping onto the thrust plate. without the spacer, the cam and timing gear lock down onto the thrust plate to the point where the engine won't turn anymore. no one seems to have this cam spacer. many people tell me that the part is not needed. i have two books and a locked up fresh rebuild that say otherwise. HEEEEEEELLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!
thanks in advance for all replies. any and all advice welcome.

You mean like this one:

I definitely have one. It was on my engine when I pulled it apart, so I put it back in with the new camshaft.

My cam came with one on it. I though this was common, mabey I was wrong.

Slade,
Isn't there an "oil slinger" on top of the spacer?? To lub the chain.
