Can I make a 1100 carb manual choke a auto? I have the parts

It looks like the parts will bolt up to make a manual choke carb an auto. The only reason I'm asking is because my old carb with auto has a hole on the bottom of the base where it bolts to adapter and the new carb does not.

Does this have anything to do with the choke? This is on a 67 mustang 200...Thanks!

Welcome to the forum mustang1967! Yes unfortunately that hole in the bottom of your old auto choke carb has everything to do with the choke (assuming you're referring to the hole that matches up with the channel in the spacer plate...grabbing a pic from the web....)

That hole provides the vacuum that pulls hot air through the exhaust manifold passage, up the stove pipe and into&across the thermostatic spring in the choke housing. Without that hole the automatic choke will not operate properly, and I don't believe it's possible or worthwhile to try and add that passage to a manual choke 1100 body. IMO the autochokes are sluggish to begin with, in our current brutal Texas heat wave the auto choke on mine still takes far too long to de-choke.

Didn't notice your locale listed on the right, but if you live in a warm climate I'd recommend running with the manual choke for a while to see if you might prefer it (if you haven't had one before). Lots of folks opt for retro-fitting back to manual...it conserves fuel by providing greater control of de-choking once the engine is warm (or not choking all together when ambient temps allow, neither of which the thermal auto choke does well). The 'Help' section at the auto parts store usually have a universal cable and you can sneak it through a pre-existing hole in the firewall to try it out (I just left mine laying along the tranny hump while I ran a man choke carb).

The other option for trying to make that auto choke upper air horn work with the man carb bottom (Note: I've not tried combining these two myself, so this is assuming they'll hook up) you might try and find an electric choke housing and mount it in place of the thermal auto choke housing and hook the wire to the stator lead on the alt for power. Although, as has been reported, 1100's never came with electric choke, so this may require some experimentation to find one that will work. I plan to try this approach myself when it cools off and I get some time to scavange the junk yards. Good luck and let us know how it goes

Thanks a lot for the reply.

I had a feeling that was the function of the little channel there on the baseplate. I'm ok with running a manual choke. I'm in the bay area of CA so really don't even need a choke to often.

I will need to find the proper cable system to operate the manual choke.

Any ideas where to find a good one?

He's got the ticket, IMHO.
