Car computer code??

Is there a good reference for learning the operation of a computer control. I have programmed in all sorts of computer languages including machine code. I would love to be able to play with the software of a car computer.
What I am looking for is a breakdown of the code on a car computer.

Has anybody ever copied the program onto a PC? It's only a couple hundred kilobytes long. Should be breakable.

Sure, Hypertech, AEM, JWT, Hondata and a bunch of other companies have done it. But individuals? Not that I know of. It is more complicated than it seems. Each computer controls many different things. The newer ones especially. Engine controls, HVAC, security, transmission, ABS, etc. It always takes a couple years for companies to crack the new computers since they are encrypted now.
