car finally running, problem tho

I have a 66 mustang, that had a clogged fuel line when i bought it. I
finally finished replacing the fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel line with SS braided hose, cleaning out the gas tank, and add a new battery.

Anyway, she starts up great, smooth and no smoke. But after 3-4 mins, she starts puffing a lot of white smoke. The previous owner said that the car would over heat, because they bore out the block too much when they rebuilt it. Is that possible? I thinking/hoping it is just a head gasket. What do you guys think i should do? I was thinking a spark plug radiator test? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I don't think an overbore could do something like that, unless they went too far and the block cracked. Don't know what the odds of that are though - someone with more experience might be able to answer that one.

A head gasket would definitely cause the problems you're describing.

Unless they did (or were trying to do) something crazy I don't really buy the bore size story. It does sound like a head gasket problem. One way or another it sounds like you are going to be pulling the head to see what is going on. If it was mine I would pull the whole motor from the car, that way you can easily have a good look at everything and dont have to spend so much time leaning over. If it does turn out to just need a head gasket you can easily check and replace all seals and gaskets and put it back together knowing that everything is good. If it turns out to be junk its going to have to come out anyway. You can get engine stands and hoists on craigs list pretty cheap from people that bought them for one project and now dont want to store them. Even new the are not very expensive.

I would recomend doing a compression or leak down check before pulling the head off.

White "smoke" is either going to be steam (not actually smoke) from coolant or smoke from burning transmission fluid.

If it is an auto car, make sure that the modulator isn't leaking and letting the engine suck fluid in.

I've seen a similar case (one of mine). There was a hairline crack in one of the intake valve pockets. When the head was cold, all was OK. When pressure built up in the cooling system, and the head expanded, she started smoking. Pull the plugs and look for unusual condidtion on one or two. Whe knows, they could have torqued the head improperly and warped it, allowing leakage between cylinders.

Like Dad always taught me, "Kill the Duck". Always check the easiest thing first. Like Bort said, the modulator is an easy thing to check and fix along with performing a leak down.

Good luck, Ric.

thanks guys, i am going to do a leak down test, then pull the head.
How do you check the modulator tho? Do you just replace it?

Don't bother sucking in a mouthful of tranny fluid, if fluid comes out when you pull the vacuum hose off the back of the modulator.
