Car sputters when key turned off

Back in the day we would use water poured into the carb in small amounts while holding the engine at about 2000-2500 rpm. Worked like a charm. You didn't want to stand behind the tail pipe because of the carbon coming out of the pipe.

We would do this to little old ladies cars just before we tuned them up. The carbon would come loose and some small pieces may stick to the old plugs.

The cool water would break up the carbon deposits in the combustion chambers.

Personally, I've done the water. But, The lubrication qualities of the ATF seem superior and therefore, favorable. Why not go with both? A 50/50 mix of water and ATF in a good pressurized sprayer holding the throttle at 2500rpm. Of course, make sure to shake up regularly being the viscosity of the liquids would immediately separate.

Oh, and replace and regap plugs afterward

For those thinking of trying this on newer cars beware it can be hard on what is likely an already plugged and stressed cat converter.

As far as old cars protect yourself and any surfaces you care about nearby. This is especially important if you are using something other than water. If you dont get the rpm and dose right it can pop back out the carb. I just got lucky I was leaning away so it missed my face and I have nice little speckles in the paint of my new at the time car and on the side of the house.

Its not really that hard or dangerous just better to be safe than sorry!

The proof that water removes carbon from somewhere is in the black stuff that comes out the tailpipe. I would only do this with carbureted cars, you don't want to mess up MAF or other sensors.

I've used a hose set on fine spray, and played the hose and throttle to keep revs up, but do not allow the water to stall the engine! This could result in hydrolock!

Cranking/firing an engine when a cylinder is full of fluid on the compression stroke is extremely unhealthy. Fluids are incompressible (almost), so other stuff will break. This goes for water or ATF. :(

Well i just thought i would keep everyone updated...but i just poured in a bottle of berrymans and did the ATF and no more dieseling...for now
