my car will not start...ive checked to see if it was the battery but the headlights and radio were still working perfectly fine...i also had to replace the - side battery clamp 2 ays ago because it blew off...i only thought that the clamp was worn a old and needed replacing by looking that the clamp smoked up and "exploded'...so now i know that it not my problem now i confused?!? im think the solinoid but it can also be the starter...is there any way to check to see if either one or both is the problem...also when i do crank it up it wont turn over and the battery cables get hot and also the cable leading from the starter to the solinoid...any help is deeply appreciated...i need to get this fixed before i leave off to college...gary

i'm thinking that maybe your electric system in the car is causing a short somewhere. may want to test the current running from the battery to the solenoid, starter, etc. last time that happened to me, but it was cuz i forgot to turn off the kill switch

 WOW blew the cable off
Sounds like the starter is shorted.
it might have also took the sylinoid with it.. I'd pull the starter and have it check, and also replace the sylinoid and check the battery it may have gotten fried as well..

I am guessing that if your starter cable is getting hot, then it sounds like the starter relay is working and supplying juice to the starter. I would test the starter. If you crank a long time, your cables WILL get hot. You might also check your cable sizes just to make sure you don't have too small of a cable size.

It takes a lot of cranking to heat up the cables on these engines if the starter is in good shape. If the starter isn't spinning when you try to crank it, the cables WILL heat up, and quickly! The next thing that blows up will probably be the battery, and you don't want that acid on you or the car  That starter is probably shot, pull it out before something bad happens and get it checked. BTW, did you replace just the clamp on the old cable? Badly overheated cables have a nasty tendancy to corrode inside, causing untold grief later on. Good luck,
Joe
