Carb ID

I was hoping that someone can help identify my carbeurator for me. It is the carb on my 63 Falcon 170, and I understand that my father replaced the carb at some point in the past.

The carb has Motorcraft in raised lettering on the side of the carb. There is a tin tag held on by one screw. The tag reads as follows:

Motorcraft

DOPF M

C 8J26

I recall buying a Borg Warner rebuilding kit a few years ago with a number of 10380A. I think that this kit covered a number of carbs, as there were a bunch of gaskets left over after the carb was rebuilt at that time.

Can anyone offer any suggestions?? Thank you.

If the tag is original to the carb, I'd guess that it came from a 70 or 71 Ford (usually Mavericks) with a 170 engine. The kits usually cover several different models and may take care of yours.

You'll need to take the tag or the carb to a store with someone smart enough to read a paper catalog. They can look up an interchange in the back of that book.

My guess, after about 10 minutes with my Ponycarbs guide is as follows:

DOPF usually means it is a Holly 1940 replacement carb. (original carb was Autolite 1100)

M likely means manaul choke (how I am doing so far?)

C stands for the design change "C"

8J26 would mean 8th year of decade (1978, as Holly 1940 debued in 1970), J is September and 26 is day of month -- Manufactued Sept. 26th, 1978

Hope this helps.

cdherman,
From what you saw, that sounded about right. Do you know, or believe that the Holley 1940 would have "Motorcraft" in raised lettering on the side of the carb? That is the thing that throws me off a bit.

I know that the carb was replaced by my father at some point, but he can't remember what it was that he put on there.

If the carb is a H. 1940, is it a good, bad or acceptible carb?

Thanks again!!!

Yes, the Ponycarbs guide mentions that it will have Motorcraft on the side.

The 1940 was never on any Ford from the factory. But it was Fords replacement part for Autolite 1100 carbs.

It is a decent carb, according to ponycarbs book. Perhaps a tad less fuel mileage than the 1100, but decent.

If you are into stock, then consider a ponycarbs rebuilt/improved 1100. If you are looking for better performance, there are a plethora of 2 and 4 barrel swaps that people swear by. I am no expert in that arena.

If it currently runs OK, then leave it alone!
