Carb problem

My 1100 carb took a crap on My 65 wagon. At the same day a customer came in the store needing a carb for his 65 sedan. I was able to find two (supposedly 1100's) in iowa at a sister store. As it turns out they ended up being holley 1940 or 1948's. He bought his an put it on..called Me back and said it worked great!. I tried installing mine today and the butterfly on the bottom is bigger than my 1100 and it wont open. Just my luck. So whats the deal? is there another spacer I need to run this carb? everything else hooked right up.

If it is really a Holley/Motorcraft 1940 then it will bolt right onto the carb base with no problem. These were direct replacements for the 1100. If it ain't then it won't!

The new carb has motorcraft 1940 stamped on it. the butterfly is larger than the 1100 and it wont open when mounted on my intake.

Howdy EP:

The Holley 1940 Was a generic FoMoCo service part after Autolite went out of production. It is possible that yours is a generic version of an Autolite 1101. One difference between the 1100 and the 1101 was the throttle bores. The 1100 Tbore measured 1 7/16" while the 1101 measured 1 11/16" These carbs cam with a SCV to replace the 1101 on 1963 cars and pickups with the 223 six. IT was also used on the 1969 Mustangs with a 250 six. These carbs did not have a SCV.

IF linkage and all else fits you can accomodate the larger butterfly by tapering out the top of the adapter plate.

I'm not sure of the 1946 models, but the 1100 on a '65 200 is rated at 185 cfm. THe 1101s are rated at 215 cfm. Well tuned you should notice more power and about the same economy, BUT- the Holley 1946s never got as good MPG as the OEM 1100.

If you haven't considered rebuilding your original 1100 please do. If the throttle shaft is fairly tight, they are easy to rebuild.

Good luck.

I think so...the carbs we ordered were suppose to be 1100's but instead we ended up with 1940's. Does anyone offer an adaptor to mount the larger 1 barrel to the smaller intake?

I do have that water heater spacer and the throttle linkage is part of it. So I can either open that one up or replace it with a larger hole spacer.
I put another older 1100 I had laying around..it didnt work on the previous onwers car but it seems to be doing fine on mine. I still want to eventually switch to this redone 1940.
