Hello, Andy here again. I am the guy with the non-running 65 Mustang. I think my problem is my carb and took it off the car and took the top cover off (air horn assembly). I have never rebuilt a carb before and need help. There is a "yellow varnish" and a "greenish slime" inside the carb. How do I clean this out? Will passages be blocked because of this build-up? How do I clean the pasages without damaging the carb? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Andy

A)go buy some carb cleaner
spray the carb down with it, wipe off anything that doesn't come up with a clean cloth

B)buy a bucket of carb soak, basically the same stuff, but it's in a half gallon-gallon bucket
dis-assemble carb, remove any and all plastic parts from it, put it in the little basket that comes with the bucket
let soak for a couple days - a week or so depending on how nasty it is

make sure it's all clean, put it back together

passages can be blocked, but either of those should be able to remove most anything from the carb

OK I will go get some carb cleaner. I just phoned the local auto parts store that I bought the carb kit at and they only sell carb cleaner in large quantities. They suggested paint thiner. Is this OK to use? Thanks Andy

It's what I use. Buy the lacquer thinner or acrylic thinner as it contains more "fast" solvents (bite in sooner and dry quicker). You'll need to soak it in a covered (sealed) pail or can though, for safety and fume control. Consider this and your health when using such chemicals. I finish by hosing the carb at 100PSI with my spraygun full of clean thinners, then blow out with air.

Adam.
