Carb

What is the maximum cfm carb i should buy for an I6? Got birthday money and looking for a 2bbl carb to replace 1bbl.

Either the 350 Holley or the H/W 5200 are good choices. Or a Weber around 32/32 or so. Some have had success with carbs as big as Weber 38s or Holley 500s, but for a lightly modded motor, the 350 or 5200 is your best bet.

Howdy BA M:

More information would be helpful to give you a meaningful suggestion. Are you looking for a 1 barrel bolt-on replacement? Or something that requires modification and/or adaptations? There are reasonable options in either case.

Another consideration is what distributor you have on your engine? Early 200s have a carb-distributor combo that are somewhat dependent on each other. Changing one will compromise the function of the other.

Depending on your circumstances and goals, a distributor upgrade might be worth considering.

Also, let me suggest that you create a logical, sequential plan so that what you do with this birthday money can be complimented by your next purchase and you end up with a complimenting package. With bolt-ons that would include, 1 improved exhaust, 2 improved distributor, 3 improved carburetion.

Don't forget safety issues as you go along too.

How about some more info on your car and your longterm goals for it.

Adios, David

That adapter will be a bolt on in the sense that the carb and adapter will bolt on without mods. However linkage will need to be fabricated or a cable throttle installed. The 350 holley it uses is a very good tunable carb right out of the box. Take your dizzy cap off look at the plates if springs are visible you have a load o this dizzy wont work with a new carb so you will have to do a duraspark conversion read the top sticky this is one of the best cheap upgrades you can do. If plates are visible you have a non load o and that while a duraspark is still better will work with a new carb.

and JackFish so far i have 255.

I went to the junkyard a few times and pulled a couple of 5200s and Autolite 2100s that were in various states of working condition. And bought a couple of carb kits cheap off ebay. Probably spent about $150 altogether, and have a nice little stash to tinker with.

If you take the JY route you could save some cash to put towards other upgrades. Like a few DS2 parts while you're at the JY... :)

I wouldn't do the carb. I'd dial the current cam, send it away for a mild regrind, replace the timing chain and lifters upon refit and see if I had enough left over to skim the head a little. Then fit a GM HEI module and a used Ford TFI coil, triggered by the points.
