Carburetor Problems

The choke flap has to be open some, otherwise there is no air for combustion. Hence the use of the 1/8" drill bit to gauge the clearance. It seems that you have a severe air leak somewhere below the choke flap. When it pulls off, there is no intake/fuel vaporization/combustion.

You need to spray some WD40 around the base and all the hose inlets. The WD40 will plug whatever holes you have briefly and you can localize the problem. It may be as simple as a missing or very loose or cracked hose at some point. They do get old, brittle and broken.

Otherwise, get a good rebuild kit and go to town on that dog.

Aer you running E-85?
If so you need to either warm up on gas or get warm air to the carb untill it does warm up. Ethanol will not vaporize at low temps.

I dunno, seems to me most every choke wants to close completely when set. Now, once the engine fires off, it's got to open up.

But I've got a manual choke, and got rid of my 1100, so I may well be in serious need of being ignored on this.

Well, try this...before starting when it is cold adjust the choke to where it just barely closes all the way, and then see if it will fire up.

My 1100 is 100% closed when the engine is cold and not running. As soon as it starts or if you push on it with you finger it will open slightly.

HI
Not sure if anyone thought of this but is the acelerator pump working?? you said it started hard and took a lot of pumps.. so maybe the acelerator pump isn't working properly... look down the carb (with the motor off) and work the acelerator linkage and look to see if the acelerator pump is squarting a good amount of fuel.. No matter how well the choke is working if its not getting a shot of fuel its not going to start..
good luck

I think I figured it out. Saturday, I pulled the carb off the engine. I started taking it apart, trying to visualize what each piece does, and I found the choke element was installed backwards. It opened the choke when it was cold and closed it when it was hot. The car had some hesitation problems pulling away from the line, but I just figured it was tuned wrong. The car started yesterday in 15 degree weather without a problem and today in 8 degree weather with only a small shot of ether. Thanks for all the help!

It should still start at +15* without the ether. Have you got a high powered coil going and have you opened the spark gap to .50 or whatever that large number is?

That and timing.

YAY! Good for you. Nothing like figgerin' it out, huh? :D
Just keep tinkering...

Could it be the fuel pump? Not creating enough vacuum to pull enough fuel from the tank and pushing fuel to the carb? Maybe a dirty fuel filter. Ken
