carter rbs accelerator pump probs

72 torino 250 with the rbs on it.

rebuilt it twice and the pump will work fine with no gas in the bowl, as soon as it fills the bowl the pump falls super slow causing stalling, bogging, and such

any ideas or thoughts on how to fix this? i talked with a couple shops and they wont tell me the secret but say they can fix it for 150 bux

you should stay away from those places, dude.



accelerator pump on carter RBS carb is primed through a diaphragm valve at the bottom; there are no check balls that could be forgotten accidentally at reassembly.

your problem sounds like a really weak spring, or clogged passage.

When you rebuilt the carb, did you remove the aluminum plug at the bottom of the pump (inside the bowl) and clean the acc. pump passage, then pressed in the new plug provided with the carb kit?
 
yep, replaced the lil cap with the rubber thing in the center i also replaced the step up diaphram i think its called. i shot cleaner and compressed air through every lil hole and passage and itll work like a dream when the bowl is empty, as soon as the bowl gets full and its pumping fuel it is really slow and even if the motor is off and i press it down by hand its hard push down.

the 150$ guy hinted at "sometime you gotta put a stiffer spring" but to me thats not fixing the problem. its more like hiding it.

it was running great after the first rebuild then crud in the tank came through and ended in me having to drop the tank and clean it and rebuild the carb again. after that ive probably taken it apart and cleaned it all out about 12 more times.

i redone all the vac lines to the dizzy and replacec cap rotor points and condensor so those arent the problem. its that damn pump

thanks so far im hoping we can figure it all out. if it comes down to it im gonna have to strip it down and soak it in cleaner for a few days then blow it all out again but im hoping i can go a different route
 
i just had a thought. the gasket i used that goes between the log and the carb is the solid one. there was another one with holes in it. which is the correct one?
 
the thick one does a better job of keeping away heat from the manifold.

On your 72 model, there should be two openings to the throat at the carb base just below the throttle plate, providing manifold vacuum to the step-up-piston diaphragm and to the choke, so the gasket with the little holes shouldn´t be needed. Switching the gaskets should make no difference, considering your acc. pump problem.

With your motor turned off and the choke plate completely open, fully depress the acc. pump rod and see how well it squirts fuel down the carb.
Try to clean the cast-in brass pump nozzle (left from the booster) with a short piece of welding wire.
