Carter YF/Pertronix

Strange dilemma. My 60 is running great. The previous owner gave up on the Holley 1904 and installed a Carter YF, I have no idea what it came off of. I figure it can't run as well as the stock 1904, right? I mean vacum advance issues and all. But the thing really does run well. Having never driven the stock set-up I wonder if it could be better? Does anyone know what carbs Ford used with these distributors in later trucks. I'm pretty sure all sixes were LOM until 1974.

OK, the reason I ask is; I'm tempted to keep the dist. I have and upgrade to a Pertronix. I have two other vehicles with them and have had great results.

I guess I'm bitchen cause its runnin better than it should. :rolflmao: What do you think?

Well like most people I was 'postin when I should a been searchin'. I searched the Rock Auto site and they list the YF as standard equipment on F100 240/300 engines starting in 1970. According to the Jegs and Pertronix sites the Igniter I Modual fits all Ford sixes 49-74.

I think I will try this. I hope this info can be of use to someone. Feel free to offer your opinions.

If it's running great now the Pertronix should at least as well if not better. Let us know.

Well I got the pertronix installed. This is my forth unit and the only one I had trouble with. It doesn't seem to fit as well as it might. I had to do a little file work on the chassis (I know, they say not to) and the gap is about twice the recommended .030. The instructions leave a LOT to be desired and their tech "hotline" is only open on weekdays. All that being said it fired up and ran fine so we will see. I found a vacuum leak at the carb base and had to order gaskets so I haven't driven it yet.

Set the timing and off I go. No vacuum leak and it runs great. Seems to start easier also.

That Pertronix was the best thing I did to my car, bar none. I've never had a problem with it. You can find a little bit more info about the PTX on the web. Most guys say that the instructions are waaay too general.

That is always such a fine moment when it comes to life and does what it is supposed to do. Congrats..
