Cleaning Deck with Pistons & Lifters Intact

I hate to beat a dead horse.."er, I mean Pony...but I have cleaned the pistons using a method I caught here, using masking tape to cover the deck and then cutting out the piston holes to clean those up...but should I try to clean the deck with a wire brush and drill with the lifters still in the engine, or should I take them out and stuff the holes with rags or something....or should I just leave the deck alone and just make sure no gasket material or gunk is on it, using a scraper type tool?? I have kind of hit on this before when discussing cc'ing the head and deck...but wonder if my readings would be better with a completely buffed deck?

Beyond removal of surface gunk on the gasket face, you don't need to worry. If the tape is still on the deck, use another bunch of tape over the top, to "sandwich" any particles of metallic grit that are magnetised and sticking there.

Regards, Adam.

I just scrape the gasket of and clean with brakekleen. then follow with a scrubbing pad and more brakleen. wipe it down with a good clean rag and it is good to go.
