Clifford carb adapter clearence issue

Has anyone used the Clifford carb adapter for a Holley? I sent off for it and what I got was a Webber adapter with a Holley plate for the top of it. This by the way DOES NOT fit the Holley 2300 350 CFM carb! You have to grind of for the leavers to move on the right side. Pretty crappy for a part you pay 68 dollars for. But the real issue is the clearance under the hood. I have a 65 mustang 200. The carb setup with out an air cleaner fits great but once you add the cleaner it just DOES NOT FIT. Again for a company that is all about inline 6s that sucks. Build something that fits or get out of the industry. Well does anyone have any ideas on how to make this fit???

Yep, easy. Get an Impco CA 300 snorkle. It is an old item used for LP gas conversions. These allow a big AF1 Dodge six air cleaner fit on the end. It is about 255 mm, by 74mm tall, with a 195mm hole, and the Impco CA 300 carb fits in there. Buy the lot from a used propane Chevy or Chrysler 318 truck, and you just open up the Propane carb, and it flows like a dream.

option 2 is a turbo hat like Does10's one, or a Jeep 4.0 90 degree gooseneck like Import Killer runs on his 200 Falcon.

I have the exact same setup you have, weber adapter with a holley plate on top. You're right, I had to grind off some of the outside of the plate to allow the linkage to function fully. A bit of a bummer but no big deal. As far as hood clearance goes, I am using a 14" drop base air cleaner with no trouble. Maybe the 68 mustang has a little more clearance generally anyway.

Cool.. hopfully there is a way out of this with out taking off the head

What type of air cleaner do you have (brand name) and what filter element? Yea i just talked to Clifford and they said they were not aware of the linkage issue...yea right...I told them i would send them a pic to show them

So the Holley 2 bbl. adapter is now a two part adapter? I bought one a number of years ago and it was one piece- bolted to the Ford spacer on the bottom (another cause of excess height) but had the standard Holley 2 bbl pattern on top. The reason I'm wondering is because it sounds like if a guy wanted to experiment with both the Holley-Weber Progressive 2 bbl and the Holley standard 2 bbl. it would be cheapest to buy the adapter for the Holley standard 2 bbl. because you'd get all the parts you'd need to run both!

I switched from the H/W 5200 to the Holley 2300 350 by using the two piece adapt. I also had to grind just a little for the linkage to clear. (The carb I'm running is an old Holley from an International so the linkage is different.)

As for the air cleaner I'm using a cheap 10 " flat base with a 2" filter I got from PAW for $13.

Moroso, K&N and others make short 2" cleaners and drop base cleaners too.

I suggest folding up a piece of tin foil 4" wide and 10+" long into a ring and placing it on top of your carb. Carefully close the hood and them measure the smashed foil for you clearance. Then you'll know what size your working with.

Hey 2blew2b,

I have a 67 Mustang 200 and I mounted a Holley #2150 2bbl backward with restoremustangs.com's carb adapter. I had no problems with throttle linkage. I fabricated my own air cleaner assembly that dropped as far as I could make it. Not far enough - hood clearance  . I took my hood off for a couple months until I figured out a solution. I'll tell you what, I caught a lot more eyes like that. Anyway, I eventually decided to cut a hole in my hood the same shape as the structure on the underside of the hood( you probably know what I am talking about). Then I pop riveted in supports to raise the portion I cut out about 1.25". Next I fiberglassed it all the way around so it is a hump, not a scoop (water issues). I will try to post pictures, once I figure that out :? . Well, I am done writing.

Steve
