What rods will fit the 250 that are stronger than the STD items without going to an aftermarket set
Will the rods from a turbo xr6 fit?

Yes, the 6.06" AU, BA, or BA XR6 Turbo ones should fit. They are the same part number, I think.

The other option is the 3.3/3.2 rods 6.27" long.

Third option, HSC 2.5 rods from the Taurus/Tempo line of US front drive I4 ohv engines (1986 to 1995-ish) which were similar (6" long).

The XR6 turbo rods are just AU Falcon rods, same on all Fords since 1998, but they have a casting boss on the thrust side of the beam for under piston jetting of oil. You can do this on the stockers if you wish via araldite and a small 1.5MM drill.

Basically, a 6.27" 3.3 rod is better as it has the right size, bearings and there is a good ACL piston with a 1.163" deck to suit.

Cant remember exactly but im sure Xecute had mentioned a mitsubishi rod some time ago ,but required some modifiaction .If there is a mitsi one available theres sure to be a aftermarket hipo rod to be had.Xecute
am i dreaming ?

cheers Dave

I can get an aftermarket set of CAPA
but i dont want to pay $1450 for a set of rods
What about rods from some sort of desiel engine? They would have to be stronger to handle the compression

Stay with bits from junked Falcon GL 5-speed 3.3 or 3.2's, or ex taxi AU rods. Gotta be some cheepies there. Then grab a book from a reputable engine builder, like Smokey Yunick, Grumpy Jenkins, or David Vizard, and read about rod preporation. Do it yourself. Get them magnafluxed and checked with die penatrate. If they cut muster, it'll be darn hard to break either of them. Rod bolts are the key. Most guys look to good ARP Windsor bolts, or bigger SPS big block Chev bolts depending on the original size.

The Astron 80 2.0 and 2.6 engines have robust 6.5" rods (1976-1984, and 1979-1996). They have a smaller rod journal (Cortina/Pinto size), smaller wrist pins (Holden red-blue-black/BMW/Nissan L-series). They are designed for 6000 rpm+ in the 2.0, and over 5000 rpm in the 2.6. Later ones in Magnas got to see 6000 rpm. All with a Falcon -like stroke of 98 mm.

The Mitsi rods would be okay as long as you can scrape together a bushed piston and turn down the cranks big ends. Lots of 'ifs' :?

To ruin a Clint Eastwood saying:-"Do you feel rich? Well do ya, punk?"

The smaller Diesel con-rods from Golfs and Passats are excellent for Holden red-blue-black engines, but at 5.35", they are too short for a 250. They run puny Holden crankpin sizes too. They are way too short. So are the LD28 Nissan diesel pistons. As the engines get bigger, the wrist pin gets huge, and the bigger diesel V6's, V8's and I4's won't fit in the confines of a Falcon piston.

Other options like 350 Olds diesel pistons and such-like are the right size for a stock 250, at about 5.886", but whats the point?

Until I see inventory on other post 1985 engines, I can't say what else will work. Bound to be something!

You can use the rods out of the F100 300 cubic inch canadian engines. They have the same big end size but a bigger gudgeon pin so need to be bushed back down to the smaller gudgeon and run floating pins with circlips.

They are very close to the same length as the 200CI conrods (6.27" from memory) so you can use the ACL race series pistons suited to the 200 rods which should also be available with floating pin circlips on request.

The downside to the F100 rods is they are very heavy compared to the 200 and 250 rods.

Also you have to be sure to get the 300CI engine rods not the 240CI rods. The 240CI engine has about a 7" rod!

I would have guessed much smaller. .4" diff in bore spacing, and the SBF is only .825".
