Hey

I was today i called flowmaster and talked to one of their techs because i was needing part #'s for my trucks mufflers, and i told them that with our sixes some of them make a wining or not to pleasent sound when we rev or drive and hit the 30-35 houndred rpm range and he told me that most likely the muffler is not leting out enough exhaust and the flowmast 40 series muffler was designed for a V8 with 4 cylinders going into rather then 6. he said the easyest way to get around this is to go with a single in dual out setup and it should not whine anymore.. this is what i have on my car and it seems to be very muscular sounding, though all rpm ranges. Do any of you out there have this setup and it whines.. just cerious if i was feed a bunch of bull sh**, from flowmaster

Wes,

from all the muffler shops and stuff I've read, they say that all flowmasters (especially the 40s) whine. usually at 2500 RPM for V-8s. So I guess the tech was right. it is designed for a V-8 to whine at 2500, not a 6 whining at 3500 RPM. From what I've seen, that's just what flowmasters do.

someone here told a great joke once about having a whine at 70mph but when he slowed down, his wife shut up...

being stock, I like the sound of my exhaust but I know I am in for a treat when I upgrade

I have a 3-chamber (70 series I belive) Flowmaster on my truck. The exhast is dual out till under the cab, then it combines together for a 2 1/2" single out. Its real quiet at an idle, but you'll hear it pretty good when you step on it. The motor sounds like a combination of a V10 & a diesel. This is a 300, so I don't know exactly how it would sound like on a small six.

my car sounds like a freakin ricer with the cherry bomb i have on it and it bugs the shiznit out of me. If the flowmasters or anything else out there will give me the sound i had when i went straight pipe:twisted: (cut it just after my front wheel cause i needed my cat off) but a lot quieter inside the car then that would be awesome.

I have a single flowmaster 40 series and i hate it. i still think it sound like a ricer of sorts. sounds really good at idle but that is about it. I would like to switch to dual out and when i do i am getting rid of the flowmaster. I don't know about borla's i have a suspicion that they will sound similar. i think i am going to go with something quieter. maybe a stock v8 muffler

Hey John:

I'm still waitin' on a reply from you.
I asked if you were getting rid of the 40 series Flowmaster.

I'll buy it from you.
Let me know how much.

John

I think all those type of mufflers that don't have any packing are like that .
I have also noticed that higher compression makes a noise difference.
8to1 isn't too bad but comparing it to the same exh at 10to1 and it will make it a good deal louder.

did you send me a pm or did i miss a post ?

anyway i can pull it off this weekend and send it to you, are you running duals or just a single? how does 75 sound it's about 3 weeks old

what vehicle are you running? i think for me to run dual out i have to use a smaller pipe. i have 21/4 now and someone said that is not good for single ?

let me know

True statement. I have a pair of 2-chamber Flowmasters on my 12:1 BBF Mustang, and they're LOUD, even at idle. Nice bark!

what about the old "turbo" mufflers. i always thought the flowmasters sound kind of raspy and crakklyly like marbles in a coffee can. they use crossovers to smooth out exhaust pulse amplitude between the sides. if you want it real barky and nasty keep it split dials all the way. actually i think it sounds best if the two sides are assymetric and you somehow have it crossed over or interconnected near the front. having the sides assymetric doesnt make a whole lot of sense from a performance or balance standpoint, but it makes a sweet sound.
by assymetric i mean different length and or diameter betweent he sides. on some of the older splits they just bored a hole in the bottom of the stock cast manifold and took off a second pipe. these had a real low husky pitch to the ear. also the split v8's where one side comes off the front of the manifold have a heathy sound. i had a 75 monza 350/350 where i split taking a second 2" pipe off the front of the left side; it was the only way to get another pipe in there. it was pretty twisted and restrictive and definitely an assymetric system.at the rear i had two 16" turbos on edge side by side. two 2" outlets side by side. that was about the sweetest sounding setup i ever heard.

I'm using Super Turbos and they don't sound like ricer at all (in my opinion). Of course, I think that the ture dual out helps too.

does anyone know of a good muffler clamp that doesnt crimp the pipe, i saw one somewhers before but cant remember where, this way i can just clamp on a single cat type deal for inspection and when thats done ust unclamp it and throw dual back on.

Walker/Dynomax makes some clamps like that, they're like a stainless steel strap with 2 bolts to tighten it, Summit has them... they are a little bit more $ than a reg muffler clamp, like $8 or $9 a piece I think

thanks for the help Mustang196t8 that sound exactly like what i want, that is a bit pricy for a clamp so i hope its worth it.
