:D :D

This happened at our last race 3 or 4 weeks ago....

The car ran a slow 15.58 @ 86.89 mph and it didnt feel right at all. Next (and last) pass was a 15.90 @ 83 mph and it lost a cylinder on the top end.

Parked it because I've been busy adding on a 2nd story "mans room" on the back of my shop, so a couple weeks ago I did a COLD compression test and it was 130-135 psi except #4 which was only 50 psi.

Pulled it apart today and this is what I found....

Number 4 piston is junk but the cylinder bores appear to be allright visually. I was at the machine shop today and they said to bring the block in and they can check it out to see if it can be machine honed and then just replace the number 4 piston and rering the rest.

If not we will decide if I want to bore it .080 over or resleeve number 4 or pitch it in the trash and start over with another block.

All the rings are on the top of the piston and the piston land on number 4 is warped.

Number 1 is the only piston that has intact rings.

I thought I was over rpm'ing it with cast pistons being I shift it @ 6400 rpms when I race but they (the machine shop) said it looked like detonation to them so thats what I'm going with.

Engine is getting pulled next weekend and we'll see what happens! :D :D

HATE TO SEE IT , but i am glad to see you found the problem.
The cylinder deal is a peace of cake, now you can fine tune the camshaft degreeing or go to the next step & install a solid lifter cam????????

At least the head is not damaged or the block is not ventilated by a rod.
You will have a cake walk into the 14's when you at least get some compression, Bill

hey doug,

I have a stock bore (may need an oversize) 200 block I will part with (D8 block)

and a .030" over with a good bore (might want a rehone for your rings......10K on it since bore job though) also a D8 block.

need to get rid of them both and they are in Southern IL (might be able to arrange delivery for gas money)

also have some roller rockers

interested?

Thanks for the offer, but luckily I have a stock bore 66 short block sitting in my shop right now :D :D

Bill,

I'm going to stay with my current cam but am going to take your advice and advance it 2 degrees.....looks like you were right on about my compression!

It was more involved than what I was thinking......

Too bad we live so far apart. I would drop off the Honing Plate for the repair and or rebuild.

Your inspection is good history. The more info we have on break downs the better materials and process's can be developed for stronger rebuilds.

Good luck, Ric.

Update :D :D

Took the block to the machine shop this morning. Number 4 cylinder is junk...would need a .015-.020 overbore to make it work so its going to get sleaved and rebored to .060 over.

Other cylinders are fine, just going to be machine honed.

He's going to hot tank the block, install the sleave, bore as necessary, hone the rest of the cylinders, install new freeze plugs and cam bearings for $385.00 (including parts) thought it was a pretty good deal!

I have a replacement piston he's going to install as number 4 piston is junk and I'm going to rering it and reuse the old crank and rod bearings.

He said I got lucky

By the wear on the cylinder he also said that number 4 has had some issues for quite a while...

Doug, i'm glad to see you do a complete cylinder restoration job.
Up where you live, there maybe snow on the ground before you get it back together. I don't know when the tracks shut down in your area of the country, but this will give you time to not rush the project & be ready next spring to put it in the 14's. Do it right & the results will be rewarding.
