Cost of a rebuild?

Hi all,

Since the Mustang is in the body shop, I'm debating whether or not to just make the car a project while it's torn apart. My dad recently agreed to get me hooked up with a 2V Aussie head, and I've done some homework and found a place that could rebuild it for about 250ish (i THINK).

What would a good estimate be for rebuilding my block? If I go rebuilt, I'd like to step up performance with a cam, 2.4 flattop pistons, reduced deck height, and maybe 1.6 rockers from FordSixParts.

Given what I'd like to do to step up performance, what would be the best route? I'm thinking Comp 260H or 264H for the cam, but with the increased lift, I'm not sure about the addition of performance rockers.

So today I did some homework on local machine shops and engine rebuilders, and I came up with 2 that I like:

-one will do the job, adding in the flattop pistons and cam and rebuilding the head for roughly 1000. Add 290 for a balance job.

-the other will rebuild my engine enhancing with flattops and doing the head over, etc for 900.

Both shops that I talked to were very polite and knowledgeable, which I liked. Due to the price I like the second one better. Are these reasonable prices? Is it worth it to get the balance job done?

Thanks,
Rob

Look for one which will torque plate hone the bores, each piston being fitted to a specific bore. This is perhaps more important than balancing.

I'll bet neither of them will torque plate hone the block, and I don't think SB6 torque plates are commonly found at domestic rebuilders. I know Clifford used to rent them out, but I wouldn't have a clue if they still do that. :( $290 is steep for balancing, it only cost me $125 to have my 200 balanced.

I'd go with the $1290 shop. $900 seems a little cheap to me for a quality rebuild

Dont be surprised if it costs a couple hundred more when your done....Theres always somthing that you forgot!!

My machine shop called the "big city" (Ft Wayne) to see if anyone had a torque plate to rent but no one had one at all... :? Doubtful if your going to find someone that has one short of a shop that does inline 6's exclusively.

Check your PM's :D :D

Later,

Doug
