Crank pulley vs. harmonic balancer...tough problem

My Ranchero had a 144/fordomatic. I swapped in a 170/2.77. I have a weird vibration from about 1800-2000 RPM, I've swapped driveshaft, rearend, and clutch, with no progress. The automatic engine had a harmonic balancer on it, which I reused. The engine I swapped in had just a crank pulley. Is this possibly the souce of my vibration? I would think it would do it all the time if it was. It only does it in third gear, between 1800- 2000 RPM ...Any ideas???

I have only seen the steel pulleys on 144s through about mid 61 (not saying I have seen it all) Ford went to the balancers due to problems with vibration in the relatively long six crank and the resulting necessary repairs (under warranty). Personally, I would try a balancer and see if it solves your problem. JMHO

Just out of curiosity, did you have your driveshaft balanced?

My 200 had a harmonic balancer on it. I would put on the engine whatever came with the 170. The balancer has nothing to do with the transmission configuration. If the 170 came with a balancer, use it.

Don't forget to check your wheel bearings in the front and back. Make sure they are greased and tightened correctly. If they look scetchy just get new ones. Other than that check all of your other suspension parts. Your wiggling may not even be related to the motor. Are your driveshaft yoke connections ok?
