How do I remove the crankshaft pulley bolt? What's the trick of keeping the engine from turning over as torque is applied? Engine is installed in the car, I need to install double pulley for AC. Thanks, Jerry

A breaker bar, properly postioned against a front frame rail, can be used to crack it loose by using the engine starter (disconnect the coil wire first, you don't want it to start!).

I couldn't get a nice square fit on the bolt from my impact gun, but that will work nicely if you've got a gun that fits squarely on the bolt. I sprayed some penetrating lube onto the bolt and let it sit an hour. I placed the end of my breaker bar under the passenger side frame rail (socket squarely on the bolt of course) and had my wife momentarily turn the car over with the key. That quickly did the trick!

Before doing this, I removed the dist cap to minimize the chance of the car starting, but to be even more safe, you may want to remove the spark plugs to eliminate any chance of compression ignition.

I had really considered the starter trick but needed reassurance that it had been tried successfully before I tore up something really bad. Thank YALL for the continuing support I receive every time I have ask. Jerry

GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jerry, just make sure the socket is squarely on the bolt and that the breaker bar is secured and not loose. If the breaker bar has some play in it to where it will slap the frame when the engine turns over, the socket will likely pop off and you may end up rounding part of the bolt's head. I pressed my hand to the socket to keep it squarely on the head of the bolt while my wife bumped the engine and the bolt quickly came loose.

My crank pulley has a series of holes in it and I placed a long 1/4 in drive extention through one so that it rested on the edge of the timing gear cover. This locked the pulley allowing the bolt to be removed.

You must believe in the power of prayer. I would have used a 2x4 stub.

I actually had my hand pressing on the back of the breaker bar that plugs into the socket, but a 2 X 4 would have been the safer choice  .

Many thanks to all of that have suggested fixes. This morning I broke the torque with the engine trick, installed new double pulley and retorqued in about 30 minutes. It sure is nice to have all of you out there to call on with these problems, Thanks again. Jerry
