Crossflow Idle

Right now I am running the crossflow with the old 1V stock carby. I am also running a C4 auto. When I adjust the idle to 650rps with the car in park it idles fairly smooth but kinda loopy because of the new cam. But when I put it in gear, it drops real low and gets very rough and just about dies out. If I adjust the idle by ear with the car in drive, I can get a very smooth idle and the car drives great. But when I put it in park the rpms shoot way up to around 2k.

any ideas?

Sounds as though the stall speed for your converter is a little low.

FB71 will be (I'm sure  ) able to tell you how to measure it fairly precisely.

hey Addo..... :P

Spyke. First, let's have you adjust the idle correctly.

Make sure your ignition timing is correct first. Assumedly you've chosen something between 6 and 12 deg BTDC. Next, get the engine up to operating temp, and ensure the choke is fully open. Now, for a carbed auto trans car, the idle speed is set with the trans in Drive. Chock the wheels, set the parking brake, and make sure the car is facing a wall, and don't walk in front of it. Idle speed in Drive, at operating temp, choke fully open, is 600-700 rpm. In Park, it should be 800-900 rpm. And, USE A TACH!!! And I mean a handheld diagnostic tach, not a dash mounted unit. Stall speed for most stock converters is around 1200-1400rpm, maybe a tad lower for I6's
