I found an Xp ute with a blown 221 in a paddock, and I found an early 250 crossflow (Xc falcon) on marketplace and now "somehow" they are both in my backyard... The new engine comes with an auto box, and the car has a 3-on-the-tree which I would prefer to keep. I don't even know if the engine will fit in the car let alone bolt to the box, or weather ill be welding some solid engine mounts and making a PVC-pipe driveshaft to pretend I have accomplished anything.

For context the car isn't worth anything more than demo-derby, and registration is not even a factor as the new engine would sooner twist the whole rusty chassis than even slip the clutch. PLZ Help

Ok so this morning I took the 221 out and now have to make the decision between keeping the manual from the car or using the auto box on the crossflow. My new question is weather or not the clutch and flywheel will fit on the 250 and if it would handle any power as it’s in frankly pretty bad condition.

The BW35 will more than likely destroy itself going from forward to reverse a lot. Apart from being a rubbish gearbox from the beginning the early ones were know for braking reverse servos and bands. I don't think it was until the BW51 where they made an attempt to reduce pressure to the reverse apply circuit.

Sorry, which box is that? The auto I’m assuming? Please explain like I’m a toddler…😂 I would much rather it be manual (if possible with the stuff I have). I am also assuming that the flywheel can bolt to the cross flows crank. Im trying to do this all this arvo so new parts is not possible.

I just did more digging and the auto says “model 40 automatic transmission Borg Warner” under an inch of grease. The manuals plate is in the pic.

Turns out, now that I have taken EVERYTHING apart, the bolts that hold the flywheel to the crank have different spacing between the two motors… so I have two options.

Option A- convert the car to auto 🤮, and put the trannie back on the 250.

Option B- save up for a couple months working after school to get a new clutch and flywheel, (probably the better option) but this car isn’t worth spending much money on and I have other cars that are in desperate need of attention.

If I do go with option A then will I run into issues with the transmission not fitting, and-or the driveshaft being the wrong length?

If I go with option b then will whatever clutch I get have the right spline for my gearbox?

P.S. thanks everyone for the help I have never used a forum before and I’m really thankful that there are people that know so much more than me and my caveman instincts.

Sounds like a great project. If I was you I would use the gearbox that came with the engine you found as it would make for an easy swap. That is how I would do it. Do not forget the commercial ute had a different rear end ratio to the sedan. As an idea for you why not search how Graffiti Publications built the XP1000 van as that has a 5 speed from a later model Falcon and they swapped the differential as well. It is still on the road today.

Thanks for that information, although I am pretty set on wanting it to be manual the best option may be to drop the auto in tonight after school and work out manual stuff later. My mum will go balistic if I spend much more $$ on it whilst neglecting the soon-to-be daily driver🤦‍♂️

I like your thinking. Use the auto at present and at a later date swap to a manual. Again look for information as to how GRAFFITI built the XP delivery as I am sure that will give you a lot of information. It was a great project vehicle that gave many a great start.

I tried to post a link to Graffiti Publications facebook page for you but it printed weird so if you google that you should find it.

Sorry for not getting back to you in a while but yes that sure seems to be a great build. I have decided to keep the automatic and put it in in a couple weekends time. thanks for all the help and suggestions they are greatly appreciated. the Ute in the picture above however I cant find much information on. I have searched the Facebook and all other media I can find and they seem to not go into the build process itself which I can only assume was saved for the mag.
