The factory service manual says to not put gasket sealant on the head gasket for the 200 but for the 170. I was going to use copper sealant spray before reading this. Why is this the case? Should I follow the FSM or does anyone advise the use of a high temp sealant?(It's a standard Enginetech head gasket btw). Thanks, David.

I don't see any reason to put it on there. I've not had a problem with any I've replaced.

The head gasket is different between the 200 and the 170...that is why installation is different.

I also think the gaskets themselves have changed since the FSM was written. You most likely have a Fel-Pro permatorque (or some other catchy name like that) that has the orange sealer like stuff already molded in.

8) if you are using a steel shim head gasket, then you can use the spray copper coat, very thin coat. otherwise use NO sealant.

Thank ya for the replies. The gasket has steel inserts around the cylinders and the rest of it is normal fiber gasket material. It didn't come with any sealant, so I guess I'll go without sealant.

I say anything about shim compensation, cause I've never dealt with it, but the Fel Pro line is about as good as it gets as their self sealing in most cases, , when I redid my head I got a couple bolts ( kinda long ones) that fit the block/head connection and cut the heads of and ground the top ends of as square as I could gett'em and screwed them in lightly and then dropped the gasket in place and then put the head on to keep the gasket from sliding around during the install,, since they weren't in tight they came right out after I got the real head bolts installed,,, just an idea to think over

I put a thin bead of RTV silicone around all of the openings that the pushrod go through. On both sides of the headgasket. Since our sixes seem to weep oil from this area, I felt it would be a good idea. So far, so good.
