This may be a stupid question. What does D.U.I. stand for?

In Australia, it stands for Driving Under the Influence (of alcohol). Same as your "DWI"

DUI and DWI are interchangeable here. I think DUI is more common.

Actually, were I live I believe there is a legal difference between DWI and DUI.

I can't remember which is which, but one is when a police officer determines that you are intoxicated regardless of physical evidence. For example, you can pass a breathalyzer and still be charged if the officer says you are impaired in his opinion. The other is when the Blood Alcohol Level is above .08%. That is an automatic charge.

So, in actuality it is a two-pronged charge. You can pass a breathalyzer and be charged with one charge. However, if you fail the breathalyzer, you are charged with two offences...

DUI = Driving Under the Influence: means blood alcohol is less than the legal limit of 0.08% but over some threshold amount.

DWI= Driving While Intoxicated: means you're caught driving with blood alcohol OVER 0.08%

Luckily I have never been caught with either , but the DWI is a much more serious offense.

DUI (driving under the influence) replaced DWI (driving while intoxicated) back in the early 70's when more and more kids blew zeros for alcohol and were clearly intoxicated with something else. The acronyms were preserved and squidged around to some sort of standard.

In Iowa, at the time, DWI replaced my favorite: OMVI, operating a motor vehicle [while] intoxicated, short form for OMVWI, which is really hard to say fast on a news show.

In California in the late 70's they all called it a 502, referring to the motor vehicle code section. DUI came up later.
There was a (now defunct) local LA product called 'Brew 102" and this was woven into many bits of low-grade humor with the DUI code: when does 102 equal 502?
