Darn autolite plugs

Got an 82 fairmont with the 200 six that was driving me crazy !!!
First. I find that the cam lobes are flattened, so I put in a new cam and lifters. While doing this I noticed the charcoal canister on the exhaust pipe, took alook at it abnd BOY was it plugged.
Reassembled the engine and BAM, its up and running.
But I kept getting a miss and popping under load. HMMMMMMM.
Checked carb settings, timing,replaced cap & rotor,new wires,Etc...
THEN it occurs to me to check the new autolite plugs I put in.
Black and sooty. Regapped from .050 to .035 and it was better but still there. Called the local Autozone and let the salesman talk me into a set of Bosch Platinum 6200 series plugs.
Boy, Do I feel stupid !!!
It's like having a brand new engine.
Moral of this story - START SIMPLE.
P.S. can anyone recommend a Hotter coil to go with my Duraspark ignition?

For all intents and purposes, is there any difference between the MSD Blaster 2, and Blaster 2F coil? Which one should I get? There is an overwhelming number of coils out there which is best?

I had a similar story. Got a new carb...installed new Champions and it ran great. (I got the flamethrower higher volt coil) next day...really bad..pulled the plugs..they are fouled bad..black and sooty. Bought new Autolites and gapped at .050. Ran great..next day..fouled. Reset the idle mixture on the carb...cleaned the plugs ran great...next day fouled. When to the store..Bosch Platinums...gapped at .045 and I am good to go.

My biggest problem now..is that the car runs better...so I run it harder and that means the engine is going in the tank faster...!! So I have been out scouring for a rebuild project engine.

The Blaster 2F is the one I have, it has the correct studs for the stock DSII connector. The Blaster 2 is the same coil but just with threaded studs to hook up standard wire connectors to.

Hmm, my 'mont runs great with the Autolites. Always has. Maybe I got lucky. But I am looking to put a hotter coil in it.
I may go with Accel, just because it's cheaper, but still hotter.

On a side note, my Eagle had new Bosch platinum plugs in it when I got it. It ran like crap once it warmed up, acted like bad fuel. I changed coil, cap, rotor, wires, you know the drill. I ended up taking the Bosch plugs out and going to the Autolites. Runs like stink now. Go figure. One man's meat is another man's poison.

I wonder how the NGK V-groove or the ND 'U' plugs would work here?

I have only used the V-groove in my engine, and they work fine, i doubt if switching to something different will improve anything that much, i have the duraspark ignition, stock 78 distributer and a MSD blaster coil.

i put in bosch platinums and started seeing smoke...(gapped at about .050)
but runnign like a bat outta hell. Maybe I am buring off some build up.

I have to run it more. Its been a grocery getting in past two months....sad

Rereading the original post, if your plugs were black and sooty, changing plugs I don't think will help you much. Sounds like you are running rich on the carb.

so why would putting in a plug that bruned gasbetter, make the sooty smoke come out more? a coincidence?

I need to get her going on hiway

Hey Chaz, which Bosch's did you go with? Stock ones for the 68 200? Or did you go hotter or colder?

I'm changing my plugs this weekend. I'm not happy with the Autolites I have. With my setup (ignition and all), should I be running a hotter or colder plug (or the stock one)? That's something I've never really understood fully (along with about a gaziliion other things)! Anyone run the Bosch +4's? Opinions?

i dont know....

I forget. It was a few 2 months ago. I will try to check

does it make that big a difference? what is the difference?

Same question then Slade..Hotter, colder, or stock?

What gap are you guys running?

Thanks

colder since I have a hotter ignition.

With the DS2, Flamethrower, 8mm Accel wires, and MSD D6+, I'm running a gap of .052. Running strong with a CR of 9.5:1

cool. You've got pretty much the same setup as me. When I ask for my plugs, do I just say I want one step colder thatn stock? Even better, do you have a part number?

thats cool...but to comment on the +4 spark plugs...it doesnt make too much of a difference for the price having multiple points for the spark to fire to...they would be a PITA to clean as well....there is a type of pug i want to try but i cant remember what they are called...its basically a normal plug, but the metal tab has a v groove in it which is supposed to allow the spark to hit the gas quicker...makes a bit of sence and i would use those probably over my regular V-groove plugs (did that make sence at all..i am having a brain fart over what arts of the plugs are called)

Dave, those plugs are called "Splitfire" plugs. I've heard a lot of gearheads say they aren't worth the money.

I bet those NGK V-grooves are about the best we can do. I went ahead and put an Accel Super Stock coil (#8140)on my 'mont this morning. I gapped the Autolites I had to .058.

Noticeable difference already. Better starts, smoother on the highway, better throttle response. I think it makes a difference. The engine just feels 'brighter' if that makes any sense. Seat of the pants, it runs better.

I want to try a set of those V-groove plugs. I used to run them in my Dodge Aries, I thought they ran cleaner.
