hey guys,

hot august nights is hella cool this year except at stop lights and stop signs she dies. check for vacume leak none found, check timing is 10tdc vacume is about 22lbs, idle in park is set at 950 rmp. im going crazy trying to figure this out it just runs very poorly and if i dont power brake it, it will die. after it dies it does start right up though. please help

wes

ps: lost of good comments to our site from people, i made up a little card that has our site on it to give to folks. alot of people realy like what were doing keep it up.

Mine did the same thing before I got a rebuilt engine. Mine did it mainly when I had the lights on or turn signal on. The engine was pretty shot so that could have been it but I think it might have been the generator. I have an alternator on the rebuilt and the engine runs great.

Fuel pump and filter, maybe. I just replaced mine. After a long trip the car died if I took my foot off the gas, and was rough at higher rpms. Easy to replace.

I've been having similar problems; the gen light goes on and off at random, hiccups and runs real rough going up steep hills, vapor lock occasionally (only when I really have to be somewhere!). So I installed a new fuel pump...still vapor locking, so it's probably a bad rebuild (not the first time) Installed a new voltage regulator, still getting pesky gen light.

Points look kind of worn down, so will switch to an ignitor, new wires etc.

Finally, a new generator. Have I overlooked anything?

No, go I would go the other way on your timing, to about 14°. I think 12 is stock for a 200 and a little beyond that is pretty good too.

Could be your pertronix ignitor. I had a Ignitor II recently and it is never going back in my car. My car will actually idle now that I pulled that thing out.

A problem with generator cars like Darren runs, is incorrect undercutting of the mica insulation on the commutator. It then bridges between segments, reducing output.
