Differences in 1 bbl Carbs from year to year, Manufacturer

First off let me introduce myself. My name is Dennis and I post with some of the folks here over at another Forum but I need some info specific to the type engine/Carb I have and not as specific to the Model Car.

It is a 1972 Ford Maverick with a 200 I6 and it still has the original 1bbl carb. It has been rebuilt before (by the previous owner) but there are some issues that a rebuild just isn't goign to take care of (choke parts and a couple other thing) and I want to buy a new or Remanufatured stock carb for my car....

Here is exactly what my Carb looks like (this isn't my carb but it is just like mine)

The auction says it is for a 1973 MAverick. 200 I6

on the other hand there is this carb

and the auction for that carb says it will fit a 1973-1974 Maverick w/200 I6

Now my car and engine are both 1972 and the Carb is (from what I can see in the picture) Identical to the carb in the first picture. and I know the carb in the second picture is a different manufacturer but looks nothing like the carb on my car and it also says it will fit a 73-74...

My Question is.. are the stock carbs from 1972 and 1973 for the 200 I6 in a Maverick interchangable? Can I put a 73 Carb on my 72 engine without modification or adapter plates???

I know you guys here will know the answer to my question... Thanks in advance for anyone that can give me a 99% sure answer.
 
Well first off, that thar is a carter YF.

Secondly, AFAIK they will all interchange. There might be some minor differences with linkage, however.

Yes I knew the one in the first picture is a carter YF. I am guessing by the box that the second picture is a hasting carb.

The reason I was skiddish about whether or not they are interchangable is because I have heard from several people/places that as the years changed on the 200/I6 most had the same intake flange but some years the flange on the intake that the carb bolts to is different and I never could find a straight answer as to which years match with which years and what years are different from the others?

So bottom line if my car has a Carb just like the one in the top picture on it now, as long as the carb in the second picture will fit a 73-74, 200 I6 then the one in the second picture should bolt right up to my engine? Is that correct?
 
Well, I never say always or never with ford, and I don't own a maverick.

But both carb's pictured are carter YF's. They have the same bolt flange and AFAIK 72 and 73 mav's should have as well.

The only likely differences will be in the accessories, (dashpot, choke, etc) and the linkage. I don't know if those two years were EXACTLY the same...
 
I should probably quit being so Da*n tight and just buy a new Carter YF to replace the one that is on the car now but I and cheap and if I can get a different brand name or a remanufactured instead of new for some substantially cheaper $$$ I will normally go the cheaper route if it will work.

Once I know for sure whether the will interchange for sure, can someone just tell me to quit being a cheap b*st*rd and just buy the Carter....LOL..hahaha

Stop being cheap and just buy the Carter!

Seriously though, if you're just trying to take the safe route and duplicate the carb that's already on there, then that would be the easiest route.
However, I suspect both would work just fine. You may have to fiddle with the lineage a bit if you get away from the exact model that was there, but it shouldn't be too bad.

The real question is, would you rather spend more money, or possibly less money but more time?
 
If you wanna be cheap (and who doesn't like to?), then buy a similar junk carb at a swap meet. Use the parts -- along with a carb kit -- to rebuild your original carb. :nod:
